About this listen

A road trip that turned into a journey.

Logan

Nicholas Theodoropoulos had been my stepbrother since I was fourteen. Mom died when I was twelve, and I resented Dad remarrying so soon. Even worse, my stepbrother had grown into a gorgeous man. I hated looking at him, reminding me every day of what I could never have. No one knew I was gay and never would. But when my best friend backed out of our road trip to California, Dad forced me to travel with my stepbrother. It was the only way if I wanted to go on this journey I’d been planning since middle school. Nothing good would come out of this.

Nick

Logan Conrad had hated me since the day Mom and I moved into his house after our parents got married. Like I cared. I had an amazing girlfriend, was the star tennis player on the varsity team, and was a recent graduate. Soon, I’d be attending Stanford with an athletic scholarship and my favorite girl by my side. Life was good. But as fate would have it, I found myself suddenly single and forced to travel across the country with the one person who hated my guts. Nothing good would come out of this.It was 1987 as two young men and stepbrothers were forced to navigate resentments and growing feelings while on a three-week road trip from Virginia to California. Will their journey finally take them to where they belong?

Loved

The narrative made the characters come to life in this story. This is amazing story that is full of emotions and heartbreak. This is a story that comes to life when listening and can feel the emotions from the narrator. The sounds that were added to the description of the reading were amazing. I enjoyed listening to this story.

Road Trip of Young Love

Harley Chase gives a marvelous performance on the voices of this story. I felt Logan's turmoil and struggles as well as Nick's confusion of his own struggles, their road trip, the 80s music vibe, the gas station attendant cleaning the windshield...being I grew up in this Era, this audio made this storyline seem realistic for me. Loved the struggles of new love, finding oneself, and being accepted. Harley really brings this book to life you will cry and laugh along their journey. The spicy scenes...OMG I really needed a fan for those!!

Fantastic

Audio:
Really well done. Great inflection, variation between characters, and pacing.

Book:
This book is absolutely exquisite. The growth and development of both MC’s as they learn more about themselves and each other is wonderful. They communicate so well, and have a blast with each other on their journey. There are some tough moments, but the guys support each other through them. The secondary characters are also interesting and well-developed. The extended epilogues were highly satisfying.

Amazing, such a compelling listen ❤️

I loved the book version of Nick and Logan’s story, and the audiobook was also amazing. The narration really adds so much emotion, and I appreciated how well the narrator was able bring the characters to life. I’ve read a bunch of stepbrother romances recently and this one was definitely a standout. The 1980s setting was so perfectly captured by the author, you can really feel the uncertainty and fear Logan and Nick have about being together. There’s definitely weight to their story but I loved how hopeful it felt as well - because these two are just so flipping happy to be together. I loved taking this road trip again with Nick and Logan, the tension building perfectly as they get closer and closer to home. I was worried for them, for sure. I think, my absolute favorite part was how strong these two are as a couple, how they stand tall together. Loved this couple a whole lot!

A LISTENING DELIGHT!!

TO BE HONEST THIS IS SUCH AN EMOTIONAL, BEAUTIFUL, AND BREATHTAKING LISTENING EXPERIENCE!

I first read this book and fell hard for Logan and Nick. Their story touched my heart. Also, I totally adored the 80s nostalgia in the story and brought such fond memories. The narrator is absolutely amazing. They made the story come a live in such an enjoyable way, and I felt like I was meeting these charactersfor the first time. Gah, it was such a fantastic listening experience.

The Opening Up Road!

I grew up in the 80's and I was taken right back to the atmosphere and attitudes of the time. Two stepbrothers who never really communicated pack in a car for the long haul. I felt it was refreshing to be back in a time when two people are on a trip together and the only thing that ends up mattering is the trip and the person you are sharing it with at that moment. Not all the technology to take you away from each other. I loved that they just started opening up and talking about their dreams, hopes and fears. Their connection solidified and became strong. This was my first listen to Harley Chase and his voices & presentation helped take me back in time perfectly! This was a unique and nostalgic listen.

Anachronisms

The book was ok until I got a lecture from the author (via a peripheral gay character) about pansexuality that sounds like it came straight out of a 2024 college campus. Decently written book, too many modern day phrases and anachronisms for me. Just because you looked at the wikipedia page for "1980s in music" doesn't mean you're being authentic. It's going in my "delete from my library" pile.

Look, authors, it's ok to just have a straight character be in a relationship with a guy and not ruminate on it. Nobody is looking for realism in gay-for-you (or "bisexual awakening") books. I don't need a treatise from a straight female author about male sexuality that you're just gonna get wrong, especially from a book that takes place in the late 1980s before every straight person and their mother decided to claim partial ownership of the "queer community."
