About this listen

A road trip that turned into a journey.

Logan

Nicholas Theodoropoulos had been my stepbrother since I was fourteen. Mom died when I was twelve, and I resented Dad remarrying so soon. Even worse, my stepbrother had grown into a gorgeous man. I hated looking at him, reminding me every day of what I could never have. No one knew I was gay and never would. But when my best friend backed out of our road trip to California, Dad forced me to travel with my stepbrother. It was the only way if I wanted to go on this journey I’d been planning since middle school. Nothing good would come out of this.

Nick

Logan Conrad had hated me since the day Mom and I moved into his house after our parents got married. Like I cared. I had an amazing girlfriend, was the star tennis player on the varsity team, and was a recent graduate. Soon, I’d be attending Stanford with an athletic scholarship and my favorite girl by my side. Life was good. But as fate would have it, I found myself suddenly single and forced to travel across the country with the one person who hated my guts. Nothing good would come out of this.It was 1987 as two young men and stepbrothers were forced to navigate resentments and growing feelings while on a three-week road trip from Virginia to California. Will their journey finally take them to where they belong?

I didn’t want this road trip to end!

I didn’t think it was possible for this book to get any better but it did! The audiobook is freaking amazing!!!

Once again I felt like I was with Logan and Nick on their road trip. It felt like it was my first time meeting them. If you have the opportunity to listen to this while on a road trip or longer drive I highly recommend it. Time flew by and I didn’t want to get out of my car. I wasn’t ready to leave the bubble of Nick and Logan’s world.

Harley does a phenomenal job giving a voice to these two characters and bringing all the emotions that go with them.

This audio and the book will never get old for me.

Absolutely loved

Harley Chase did an amazing job bringing Logan and Nick to life. This audio was just as hard to put down as the book. Great job with the emotional moments. I look forward to more audiobooks by Harley.

This book is such an amazing listen.
Nick is the perfect match for Logan. I absolutely loved that he was able to help Logan open up. Their communication throughout this book is amazing. It's breaks my heart to see Logan having to hide himself and how much it affects his relationships with Nick and also his family. I really liked that they each had a friend that was there for them from the beginning and the new friends they found along the way.

Wonderful Story, Amazing Performance!

Nick and Logan's amazing journey on the way to their HEA will remain with me for a long time. I was so happy that once they got together they stayed together for the rest of the journey...no ridiculous 3rd act break up here! Although younger than Logan and Nick at the time, I still grew up in the 80s so I appreciated the pop artists and the clothing and hair styles mentioned. Also, you can't write about a coming of age story involving sexuality without mentioning the A.I.D.S. pandemic. Hats off to Harley Chase, he is a new performer to me and I loved his voice so much I had to see more of his work; it's too bad there isn't more! The author Courtney W. Dixon is new to me as well, unfortunately she doesn't have more in Audible, but that's okay, I still have Kindle! I have my eyes open for a Hunter and/or Calab story?!?

5 starz - I would listen again

Harley Chase's narrations enhances wonderful story

Specific to Audio: Harley Chase performs Nick and Logan so well! The voices are distinct and sounded age appropriate. Harley's voice is wonderful to hear and has a nice cadence. A favorite part for me is how Harley performs the spicy portions - really brings out the heat between the MCs!!! I enjoyed listening to this book and the narration enhances an already wonderful story line.

This book feels pretty special to me. I think it has such a subtle, quiet beauty to it and it gave me some Stand By Me vibes (um, the movie since I don't think I read that) in the sense of how it feels nostalgic at the same time that things are taking place. I really felt like I was there right along with Nick and Logan.

Logan, a moody, closeted gay teenager, had lost his mom in his very early teens and his dad remarries a bit later, bringing Nick and his mother Mia into the family. Nick is the same age as Logan, though they clash horribly throughout their high school years. As a closeted teen, Logan is so afraid to be outed that he takes out a lot of anger on his stepbrother in part as a means to hide the crush he has on Nick. While they are antagonists, at least they each have a super supportive BFF (and I'm hoping both of them will get stories, too!).

Logan's BFF Hunter has a tragedy occur in his life and is unable to go on the road trip from VA to UC Berkeley that he and Logan have planned in memory of Logan's mother. Instead, Logan is forced to take his crush/nemesis Nick and everything changes for them during this epic road trip. While they still clash for a few days, eventually between some beer and Nick's fantastic ability to get Logan to open up, they begin to communicate openly and freely. Nick never lets Logan get away with bottling things up inside & their open communication is one of my fave things about this book. Over the course of this trip, they get to know each other and connect deeply. They each had issues of various kinds, but they communicated so well (usually because Nick would make it so, lol) that they managed to resolve so much on their way to UCB and their HEA.

The heat between Nick and Logan is hot - I love how they explored each other and their sexuality. I feel like it worked really well, given their age and experience level, to have some scenes happen off page and some on. I loved how surprisingly open Nick was to everything & also how possessive of Logan he was (there is one scene that was especially FIRE). Both boys are all in with their hearts and their bodies and I love that too.

There are so many lovely scenes in this books, both in the sense of the natural world, but also in how they are with each other. One of my fave scenes takes part in Austin where they meet an older gay couple and they have a really great conversation that has a lot of impact on both Nick and Logan.

Given the time period/setting of this book, it is surprisingly not that angsty. The parents and BFFs of the MCs were overall supportive and it was so nice to see this a relative lack of drama in regard to their coming out. While their experiences maybe weren't typical, they weren't necessarily atypical, either, especially given that LGBTQ topics were already part of public discourse. I love the peaceful bubble they were in and the focus on how they came to be together. It is lovely to have a sweet story about a MM couple without tragic consequences for their love.

I also love how Logan and (eventually) Nick as well as their friend group all went on to become people who help others. I very much enjoyed the epilogues, including the bonus one that we have to download from the author, though I wouldn't have minded more pages of their lives, haha! I still feel really emotional after finishing this book very late last night (ok, this morning), since I couldn't put it down. I worked at 5:30am with zero regrets, though, over my lack of sleep.

I also enjoyed all the promo (images, playlist, journal entries) the author created for this book - it was a very full experience overall! I'd love to see Logan's journal at a downloadable bonus file, though!

What to Expect:

* Stepbrother MCs
* closeted/gay football player MC + tennis player MC
* epic 3 week road trip from East to West Coast
* pan awakening
* first times & coming out
* college students
* set in 1987
* enemies to lovers

Road Trip of Young Love

Harley Chase gives a marvelous performance on the voices of this story. I felt Logan's turmoil and struggles as well as Nick's confusion of his own struggles, their road trip, the 80s music vibe, the gas station attendant cleaning the windshield...being I grew up in this Era, this audio made this storyline seem realistic for me. Loved the struggles of new love, finding oneself, and being accepted. Harley really brings this book to life you will cry and laugh along their journey. The spicy scenes...OMG I really needed a fan for those!!

I received this as a copy for free to review, and I am leaving my honest review voluntarily.

This is a story that comes to life when listening and can feel the emotions from the narrator. The sounds that were added to the description of the reading were amazing.
