About this listen

When Aidan Lloyd's bleak funeral is followed by a nocturnal ritual in the fog, it becomes all too clear that Aidan, son of a wealthy farmer, will not be resting in peace. Aidan's hidden history has reignited an old feud, and a rural tradition begins to display its sinister side.

It's already a fraught time for Merrily Watkins, her future threatened by a bishop committed to restricting her role as diocesan exorcist for Hereford. Suddenly there are events she can't talk about as she and her daughter, Jane, find themselves potentially on the wrong side of the law.

In the city of Hereford, DI Frannie Bliss, investigating a shooting, must confront the apparent growth of organised crime, also contaminating the countryside. On the Welsh border, the old ways are at war with the modern world. As the days shorten and the fog gives way to ice and snow, a savage killing draws Merrily Watkins into a conflict centred on one of Britain's most famous medieval churches, its walls laden with ancient symbolism.

Merrily Watkins' Haunted Herefordshire

If you haven't read any of Phil Rickman's Merrily Watkins books, you are missing a real treat. These quietly terrifying books are a view of the English countryside that take the everyday circumstances of life and show you what would happen if you stir in just a little true evil. Phil Rickman has a deft way of describing the surroundings, and his characters jump off the page. He uses complicated plots tied to the history and customs of the area to entertain and terrify the reader (or listener). Give these a try. I am working on learning the Breastplate of St. Patrick, just in case!

Might be the best Merrily book yet.

I've been a huge fan of this series for some time, and though I wasn't thrilled with the last book--its a bit of a "transition" novel, necessary in order for the characters to have room to grow, but a bit dark because of this--this one reminds me why I loved the series so much in the first place. And though it ends with all our characters still in transition---Frannie Bliss and Annie Howe in the most shocking way possible--the story is fantastic and we can see a light at the end of the tunnel for all of them. Or at least those who survived the winter's night.

Confusing

Would you try another book from Phil Rickman and/or Emma Powell?

Wearisome overuse of delayed explanation of events. Big stuff happens but not described as it happens, flash forward and then characters explain how it looked and felt to them. Confusing and frustrating.

What could Phil Rickman have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

See above.

Probably the worst…

Sorry to say, but I could not follow this story. I kept wondering who the people were that were speaking. I tried to stick with it but could not. It’s almost as if it were never edited - at all!! Try to return.
