Publisher's summary

A breathtaking, enchanting new series by debut author Jessica Townsend about a cursed girl who escapes death and finds herself in a magical world - but is then tested beyond her wildest imagination.

Morrigan Crow is cursed. Having been born on Eventide, the unluckiest day for any child to be born, she's blamed for all local misfortunes, from hailstorms to heart attacks - and, worst of all, the curse means that Morrigan is doomed to die at midnight on her 11th birthday.

But as Morrigan awaits her fate, a strange and remarkable man named Jupiter North appears. Chased by black-smoke hounds and shadowy hunters on horseback, he whisks her away into the safety of a secret, magical city called Nevermoor.

It's then that Morrigan discovers Jupiter has chosen her to contend for a place in the city's most prestigious organization: the Wundrous Society. In order to join, she must compete in four difficult and dangerous trials against hundreds of other children, each boasting an extraordinary talent that sets them apart - an extraordinary talent that Morrigan insists she does not have. To stay in the safety of Nevermoor for good, Morrigan will need to find a way to pass the tests - or she'll have to leave the city to confront her deadly fate.

Perfect for fans of the Harry Potter series and Neil Gaiman, this fast-paced plot and imaginative world has a fresh new take on magic that will appeal to a new generation of listeners.

Critic reviews

"The magical elements are well-written and clever...but the core of this novel lies in Morrigan's realization of her own value, of being a person worth attention and affection. A dark, mystical, and emotional look at a girl who has a complex relationship with magic in a sophisticated and lushly described world." ( The Bulletin)

Promising start

Really enjoyed this one, got some definite Harry Potter vibes but it brought over a good number of unique spins. The only downside was the way some of the characters were voiced. The antagonists especially got very irritating after a while, the worst offender was over-the-top valley-girl voice of one of the main character's rivals. Overall, liked the story and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

repeat reader

i have read this book now 3x and will start it over yet again. i havnt fallen down a rabbit hole this hard since Harry Potter. my love for Jupiter, Morrigan, Fen, Hawthorn, and Cadence exceeds my adoration towards anything i can imagine. Nevermoore takes me away into this strange and magnificent place where the unfortunate, strange and disbelieving occur. Jessica out did herself with this beautiful series

listening to the audiobook over reading pape by page myself is a MUST, Gemma captures all the characters soo well i never have to guess whos speaking and she helps the words peel off the pages and perform in your mind as you close your eyes and enjoy.

A Book Even Adults Will Like

Excellent story telling & imaginative. I’m quite above the age the book is intended for, but thoroughly enjoyed it. It was nice a nice change to read a simpler tale than what is written for adults that didn’t have intense violence, sex, etc. (this from a fan of George R.R. Martin.) The story was flushed out, characters well-developed, & vivid imagery.

Excellent Journey

I loved the story and characters of this book, and it was a wonderful ride to listen to. I can understand the parallels others are making to JK Rowling and HP, however I found the book to be unique in its own right. A classic Hero's Journey. Very enjoyable.

Best fun since Potter.

I loved the twist around of this story. It's like Roald Dahl meets Rowling in a mash up that comes out uniquely flavored Jessica Townsend. Gemma Whelan does a really nice job reading this story. I Am very clear about what color I'll display at Christmas time. Both green and red. I'm glad that will be easy to achieve and also very glad to have a new understanding as to why. 😁

loves every word.

Morrigan Crow might well be the single most riveting heroine ever written. Nevermoor is an exquisitely delightful book and I couldn't recommend it more.
