How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Their domain was not the old Confederacy, but the Heartland and the West. They hated Blacks, Jews, Catholics and immigrants in equal measure, and took radical steps to keep these people from the American promise. And the man who set in motion their takeover of great swaths of America was a charismatic charlatan named D.C. Stephenson.

Story
We all think we are compassionate just like we all think we are honest. But true compassion is not innate. Compassion for others, especially those that we don’t know or understand, must be learned. Our lack of compassion is perhaps most extreme in the exercise of criminal justice, where a person’s entire life, worth, and character are judged through the myopic lens of a single act. But no one, says Robin Steinberg, should be reduced to their worst moment. From the founder and CEO of The Bail Project, The Courage of Compassion unveils how we can reimagine justice through compassion.

Story
In 1972, the United States Supreme Court made a surprising ruling: The country’s death penalty system violated the Constitution. The backlash was swift, especially in Texas, where executions were considered part of the cultural fabric, and a dark history of lynching was masked by gauzy visions of a tough-on-crime frontier. When executions resumed, Texas quickly became the nationwide leader in carrying out the punishment.

Story
On New Year's Eve, 1939, a horrific triple murder occurred in rural Oklahoma. Within a matter of days, investigators identified several suspects: convicts who had been at a craps game with one of the victims the night before. Also at the craps game was a young black farmer named W. D. Lyons. Political pressure mounted to find a villain. The governor's representative settled on Lyons, who was arrested, tortured into signing a confession, and tried for the murder. The NAACP's new Legal Defense and Education Fund sent its young chief counsel, Thurgood Marshall, to take part in the trial.

1936 was a great year for the movie industry - the financial setbacks of the Great Depression were subsiding, so theater attendance was up. Americans everywhere were watching the stars, and few stars shined as brightly as one of America's most enduring screen favorites, Mary Astor. But Astor's personal story wasn't a happy one. Born poor and widowed at 24, Mary Astor had spent years looking for stability when she met and wed Dr. Franklyn Thorpe.

A true American hero
I'm not a big fan of pornography but am passionate about the first Amendment. I first came to admire Flynt when I read about how pro-feminist his publishing company was. He treated women fairly and paid them well . This too short autobiography reveals what a brilliant articulate man he was who hated hypocrisy and the fake morals of the religious right and was willing to be jailed and shot to continue his crusade against these "assholes" as he called them . We need more people like him today. A great read, at times funny, shocking and triumphant.

Captivating
This is the story of an incredibly controversial man- who lived a life that you may not want to recreate for yourself but you cannot help but be intrigued by.
Larry Flynt is many things, but in his complexity, irreverence, obscenity, and even his off-beat soft side, is a force that begs you to evaluate your freedoms, social values, and sex.

UnSeen Hero of America & Full Emotional Experience
Larry Flynt, believe it or not, is one of my Hero’s way up there top ranks. The movie is a must as well. This American story is ONE OF OUR MOST IMPORTANT! It’s humble, it’s human, it’s about strong will for what is RIGHT & how we CAN FACILITATE OUR OWN FREEDOM when SO MANY of US are violated by corruption in government; society’s unfair judgement & it changes the way must live; & how standing up for your RIGHT can impact so many. It’s a story of humility; will for surviving all things, American pride, independence of our own minds; capitalization & economics; lesson on judgement of ppl; a TRUE LOVE story & magical; a story of loss, grief, great suffering; SUCCESS in life’s full gamut of experiences & of how this country REALLY WORKS IN GOVERNMENT & teaches us to do what is right & not let anyone tread on that right. We Can Endure All Things. Never to pass judgement. Sometimes Success isn’t Everything. We must be Courageous. The Power of a man to love & respect all persons & how that itself changes a human profoundly. LARRY FLYNT, I LOVE YOU, TRULY! I’m bored & tired of all the shallowness in ppl. I love U & send me out or come on over! Thx for EMPOWERING ME in my battles w all of the above! U make heart succeed.
ONE OF THE BEST HUMANS IN THE WORLD - A GREAT AMERICAN! You Will Understand how & why!

Not Highly Recommendable
If you desire things of "virtue," you will not enjoy this book. If you like porn, you will probably enjoy this book. If you want facts, this book provides a few. Just the tip of the iceberg.
