About this listen

The Emmy Award-winning legal journalist and co-host of The View Sunny Hostin chronicles her journey from growing up in a South Bronx housing project to becoming an assistant US attorney and journalist in this powerful memoir that offers an intimate and unique look at identity, intolerance, and injustice.

“What are you?” has followed Sunny Hostin from the beginning of her story, as she grew up half Puerto Rican and half African-American raised by teenage parents in the South Bronx. Escaping poverty and the turbulence of her early life through hard work, a bit of luck and earning academic scholarships to college and law school, Sunny immersed herself in the workings of the criminal justice system.

In Washington, D.C., Sunny became a federal prosecutor, soon parlaying her wealth of knowledge of the legal system into a successful career as a legal journalist. She was one of the first national reporters to cover Trayvon Martin’s death - which her producers erroneously labeled “just a local story.”

Today, an inescapable voice from the top echelons of news and entertainment, Sunny uses her platform to advocate for social justice and give a voice to the marginalized. In her signature no-holds-barred, straight-up style, Sunny opens up and shares her intimate struggles with fertility and personal turmoil, and reflects on the high-stakes cases and stories she worked on as a prosecutor and during her time at CNN, Fox News, ABC, and The View.

Timely, poignant, and moving, I Am These Truths is the story of a woman living between two worlds, and learning to bridge them together to fight for what’s right.

A positive message!

I loved your book Sunny. I found so many relatable experiences and good advice to handle the discrimination that is so rampant in professional work places. Women still struggle with equal pay no matter color. Hospitals will always be about the almighty buck, and not the dedicated staff that keep it running! I cried to listen about the treatment you received! Over 30 years as an RN, I had to give it up to save my own health from fighting everything thats wrong with the system. I hope your message reaches those that can somehow bring compassionate medicine and empathy back to hospitals. By the way, I watch the view because of you!

Loved It

My Mom watches The View faithfully and was excited to learn that Sunny recorded an audio version of her book. Mom is no longer able to read due to vision loss.. She was fascinated by Sunny’s journey and transparency. Thank you Asunción for sharing your story!

Great testimony

Sunny gives us a comprehensive look at the lived experience of those on the margins. It’s especially powerful coming from such an accomplished person. It also helps everyone to see that there will be obstacles in your path to success. There will be those that will hate you just because. There will be those that will be wrong about you. Which is why we should never believe those that we wouldn’t take advice from.

I love audiobooks whereby it’s the author’s voice

I really enjoyed this! It was great to hear Sunny’s origin story from her mouth. It is so inspirational! Only one critique- sometimes from chapter to the next it jump around. For example, when she went back to talk about her parents divorce after we were on what I felt like was a different topic/subject. Sunny, I’m so sorry you went through so much to get your two beautiful gems and blessings. It’s a good reminder of what we take for granted. Also, I too do not understand why people keep asking her to choose a side. She is both and can be both! I’m reminded of my on struggle to figure out a community where I fit in- my parents immigrated from Africa and we lived in the suburbs. I’ve been told many times “you talk white.” So I understand that culture war raging inside only oneself. I can’t wait for the 3 new fiction books she’s got coming out next year!
