About this listen

Wisecracking reporter Dixie Flynn thinks fast and talks even faster - it's the only way to survive the San Francisco crime beat. When she's assigned to look into the death of her former lover, artist Diego Chino, Dixie's instincts tell her there's more behind the apparent suicide than the police are letting on. Dixie's canvassing of the Bay Area art district reveals it to be a perfect picture of corruption, with a handsome art dealer and a reclusive patron in the foreground. After a romantic evening in Chinatown ends in a brush with death, Dixie is more determined than ever to expose the truth. But when a fire in her vicinity turns out to be more than just performance art, it's clear the perpetrators would rather see Dixie dead than let her destroy their criminal masterpiece.

Editorial reviews

In the first installment of M. C. Grant's Dixie Flynn Mystery series, a wisecracking San Francisco reporter assigned to the city's crime beat is investigating the death of a former lover. Though ruled a suicide, Dixie has her doubts, and as she gets closer to the truth, the more life-threatening it becomes for her. Amy Rubinate's performance is impressively multifaceted; she gives Dixie a streetwise sturdiness while making the police gruff and ineffectual, and turns the San Francisco art world into a seamy cesspool of dangerous lowlifes. Rubinate provides depth to the already colorful world in Angel with a Bullet.

Why aren’t all mysteries peppered with laugh-out-loud sarcasm and edge-of-seat suspense like M.C.Grant’s irresistible storytelling?

And why are all narrators perfectly cast like Amy Rubinate, who is so Dixie it’s not even a contest to imagine anyone else even auditioning. Her other voices are well-done also.

Great escape.

My new fav

I enjoyed the book and the reader, don't get me wrong. It's just a little...odd. But I liked it enough to get the rest of the series.

Interesting?!

I liked Dixie so that mitigated some rough spots in the plot. All in all I think I will pick up more of the novels in the series.

Okay story with a likeable protagonist

I struggle with finding new authors to read and am so glad I gave this one a chance. I was looking for a strong female character lead and what I consider strong sometimes differs from an author’s perspective. This did not disappoint. Dixie is quite the character! There was a great mystery, great investigation by Dixie, great characters and an engaging story. The narrator does a great job of bringing this story to life!
