About this listen

It's Halloween, and life is grim for twenty-three-year-old Dimitri Petrov. It's the one-year anniversary of his parents' deaths, he's stuck on page one thousand of his Rasputin zombie novel, and he makes his living writing obituaries. But things turn from bleak to terrifying when Dimitri is assigned to cover a séance at the reputedly haunted Aspinwall Mansion. There, Dimitri meets Lisa, a punk-rock drummer he falls hard for. But just as he's about to ask her out, he unwittingly unleashes malevolent forces, throwing him into a deadly mystery. He wakes up in the morgue - icy cold and haunted by a cryptic warning given by a tantalizing female spirit. As town residents begin to turn up gruesomely murdered, Dimitri must unravel the connections among his family, the Aspinwall Mansion, and the secrets held in a pair of crumbling antiquarian books. If he doesn't, it's quite possible Lisa will be the next victim.

Fantastically Entertaining

A fabulous read in all ways... The story engages from the jump and doesn't slack off... It's a creative and unique story line w/ wonderful characters and delightfully snappy humor... The pace of the story is excellent and the narration is superb and utterly character appropriate... If you enjoy Thrillers, humor, and/or horror you'll appreciate this offering... If you need a comparison think Stephen King meets Scott Meyer;) After a debut novel this imaginative I'm absolutely looking forward to the writer's next novel due in September... Got it on a 2 for 1 sale, but no doubt would have been happy to spend a credit on it alone!!! You're welcom and enjoy;)

Listen to your gut instincts, I did

I read this book back when I first saw as a new release at the library. Years later I remembered the book and went looking for it. There are only a few books I ever pick up again and this is one of them. I loved every aspect of the horror, mystery, romance and humor this story offers. The main protagonist has some flaws to his approach to serious matters, but at the same time that immature flaw seemed to fit.
The narrator did a fine job with the story. However, I have to take a star away because there are points in the story that requires a little bit of singing and it was....umm...if I can't do better, I won't expect Luke to as well. Other than those few times, it was great

Really enjoyed it

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

It took a while to build, but build it did!

Which character – as performed by Luke Daniels – was your favorite?

Dimitri, of course!

Any additional comments?

If you are big fan of Joss Whedon's ouvre, this book is for you!

Wonderfully written!

Where does Poe rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I would rank this on my list as a solid 8+. I was kept in the dark (which I like) and every time I "thought" I knew what was coming next, I was blindsided.

What other book might you compare Poe to and why?

I've been reading the "Harry Dresden" series and this book is very similar because there's help coming from outside entities.

Which scene was your favorite?

The writing and communicating with fridge magnets was unique and original.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

A Lesson in Humility

Any additional comments?

I would advise anyone reading this summary to definitely take a shot at this book. I was so completely engrossed in it, time flew by and I had a hard time putting it down to get sleep!

freaking amazing

I just can't even with this book. it was funny, creepy, and just amazing in general! unafraid of dropping cuss words just like a normal person would in conversation and kept me up at night spooked as I listened in a dark bedroom regretting choosing a book on a whim so late at night.

Odd Thomas without the Preachiness

This was well written, well told and well read.

For very picky readers like me, a few words misused or pathetic fallacies or just clunky language can kill a story in the first few pages, so when I say well-written, I really mean it.

Engaging characters with good dialogue. The charm of Odd Thomas without the preachiness. Loved it.

Not finished - but need to write this!

I'm not even finished with this story, but need to write a review because it's so freaking awesome! The story is an edge-of-your-seat kind of thing. I love the twists and turns. However, the Luke Daniels is rockin' his role as reader! Not every book works to have a voice-driven and enthusiastic reader, but Poe is a perfect fit. At one moment, you are laughing, the next, consumed in an intimate moment - all enhanced by a perfect fit reader. What a rush!

Just not for me.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would not recommend this over so many other titles in this genre. I get the that author was trying to be fresh and new but it was too disjointed. The narration only serve to highlight the aspects of the main character I just could adopt any real interest in.

If you’ve listened to books by J. Lincoln Fenn before, how does this one compare?

I've not listened to his books before, I don't think I will again.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Luke Daniels?

I'm not sure the narrator was the real issue I had with this book. I found the humor of the character more annoying and the story was really disjointed in places. I found myself at the end of the booking and thinking, "what was that all about?"

Was Poe worth the listening time?

No. I barely got through it the first time.

Any additional comments?

I'm fully willing to admit that this book just didn't appeal to me personally. I'm sure some would appreciate the unique and quirky character the sense of humor but it was just simple too distracting for me. It did nothing to enhance a story I already felt was a little weak.

Great read/listen

Good listen. The main character had me laughing a few times at his quips. Narrator was really good, despite other reviews. I've heard poor narration and this was great. Many voices, could tell which character was speaking and he gave them personality.

Enthusiastic Narrator

Would you consider the audio edition of Poe to be better than the print version?

I didn't read the print version, but I enjoyed the audio version, strictly due to the enthusiasm of a talented narrator. At times, the story was quite slow, but the narrator's inflection, tone, etc. brought to mind the quick wit and sly smile of B actor Bruce Campbell, who I adore. I pictured a young Bruce Campbell as Dimitri Petrov throughout the story.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Not really...I don't think I would have just enjoyed this story in written form.

What about Luke Daniels’s performance did you like?

Mr. Daniels' brought to mind the quick wit and sly smile of B actor Bruce Campbell, who I adore. I pictured a young Bruce Campbell as Dimitri Petrov throughout the story.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me laugh aloud several times because of the narration.

Any additional comments?

I would definitely listen to Luke Daniels on other works.
