About this listen

Her old schoolfriends are dead. She might be next.

When Ruby hears from her best friend Elizabeth that two of their old classmates have been murdered, Ruby is more certain than ever that leaving her hometown was the right decision. But after Elizabeth suddenly stops responding to texts, and Ruby hears a third classmate has been killed, she knows in her heart what has happened. Elizabeth is dead too.

Missbrook Bay is a place haunted by memories Ruby wanted to forget, and people she never wanted to see again, but Ruby has no choice but to go back to investigate. While staying with her ex-boyfriend, she notices a pattern in their full school year photo—the killer seems to be working through victims in a specific order. And after her ex’s house is broken into, Ruby realises nowhere and no one is safe.

There are still many faces left in that photo. Any one of them could be the next victim—and any one of them could be the killer. And with each death, the killer is getting closer to Ruby.

Critic reviews

“Narrator Moira Quirk takes listeners through the multiple twists in this thriller based on school-day grudges.… Quirk’s character work keeps listeners engaged with the emotions and drive of the murder suspects in a way that makes it seem like no one is truly safe. Quirk is no stranger to narrating thrillers, and her skilled delivery keeps listeners enveloped in suspense.”AudioFile Magazine

Too many asides damaged a decent, if unoriginal, storyline

While details from a character's childhood, and about her thoughts and conditions that affect her actions within the book, matter, this author seemed so unable to focus that his inclusions were overkill. The minute details of every relationship, the false leads that took waaaay to long to develop and end, the painful drawn-out aftermath--all just made what was supposed to be the plot and theme just fell into the background. Instead of making the story more interesting somehow, he over-explained the main's every thought and emotion, and chose to add details about her that didn't strengthen the story or our feelings about her, or what she did or didn't do. I was, truly, quite bored, especially the droning on about her relationship with her step dad, and the last few chapters. Didn't show growth (she still allowed the misconceptions of her actions to just lay out there-? NO) or anything else we could get satisfaction from. Very eh, all around.

not recommended

The book was ok, but it was filled with so much side piece fluff, it got to a point where it was aggravating. The narration was fine, the storyline was not. Not believable, not good character development, all over the place.

PASS

Oh my, had to stop at chapter 3 nine minutes in. Slow, wordy, and boring. Moving on to something I can pay attention to without my eyes glazing over.

Do not bother

Overwrought, drawn out and not believable. Also not worth the credit. I am considering returning the title; what a colossal waste of words.

Blah

This did not keep my interest. Slow start. Long drawn out. Don’t waste your time.
