About this listen

New York Times best-selling author Marie Bostwick welcomes listeners back to picturesque New Bern, Connecticut - a perfect place for a woman whose marriage is in turmoil to discover a new pattern for living....

Twice in her life, college counselor Gayla Oliver fell in love at first sight. The first time was with Brian - a lean, longhaired, British bass player. Marriage followed quickly, then twins, and gradually their bohemian lifestyle gave way to busy careers in New York. Gayla's second love affair is with New Bern, Connecticut. Like Brian, the laid-back town is charming without trying too hard. It's the ideal place to buy a second home and reignite the spark in their 26-year marriage. Not that Gayla is worried. At least, not until she finds a discarded memo in which Brian admits to a past affair and suggests an amicable divorce.

Devastated, Gayla flees to New Bern. Though Brian insists he's since recommitted to his family, Gayla's feelings of betrayal may go too deep for forgiveness. Besides, her solo sabbatical is a chance to explore the creative impulses she sidelined long ago - quilting, gardening, and striking up new friendships with the women of the Cobbled Court circle - particularly Ivy, a single mother confronting fresh starts and past hurts of her own. With all of their support, Gayla just might find the courage to look ahead, decide which fragments of her old life she wants to keep, which are beyond repair - and how to knot the fraying ends until a bold new design reveals itself....

loved it

the only problem I noted is continuity... dates and stuff matching up... Gayla and Bryan were married for 27 years but we're married in 1993? Isn't it 2013 in this story? Bethany calls Ivy mommy when in Franklin's office and it is mentioned that she hasn't called her that in years. but at the beginning of the story (during computer issue) she calls her mommy.

All of the books in this series are enjoyable. The ladies are loving and generous with each other. They all had a lesson to learn about life and it was fun going on their journey with them.

Sabbatical

A leave or sabbatical from life leads to new challenges, friends, love and quilting. Wonderful characters, strong friendships, as with the previous books you feel a part of their quilt circle.

good read

Wonderful story. A little "churchy" but not distractingly so. Narration enhanced the story. Liked lots.

New Courage, Best Old Memories, Stitched Together

This series is one that causes women to think, to love and to have compassion for one another . . . to stop being so quick to judge their sweet sisters about the path they have taken . . . or even more so the one that has been thrust upon them, many times through no choice of their own . . . Apart at the Seams hit me hard, with many emotions . . . first off, I did not like Lanie, Gayla's "friend" . . . whom I suspect, deep down, was jealous of Gayla and Brian's 26 year long marriage . . . at the first inkling of trouble, Brian went from "the last good man on earth" to a cheating scumbag, not deserving of a second thought . . . Gayla's retreat to New Bern was a godsend, no matter how many dishes she threw and broke . . . and cooler heads prevailed there . . . and best of all, LOVE, FAITH, and JOY prevailed there . . . Phillipa's clear head and talk with Gayla after she totally lost her head a second time, was a high point of the story for me . . . I loved the additional stories of Ivy and Dan, and of the 85-year-old sky diving, Virginia . . . I applaud Marie Bostwick for taking on life's hard issues in her books, which some listeners may find difficult . . . I always find that she is not heavy handed in the telling of her stories . . . not hitting anyone over the head with the Bible . . . yet those of us who love the Lord are nearly always pleased with the resolutions that come forth . . .
