About this listen

One great series in a single offering!

I'm just an ordinary guy, but I'm about to discover a world of magic, danger, and unexpected allies in the enchanted confines of a sleepy town's mysterious magic shop.

When I inherited my grandfather's magic shop, I wasn't exactly thrilled. I have plans, and inheriting a magic shop in a sleepy, mysterious little town isn't one of them.

But when I discover a stunning girl named Elodie, with cat ears atop her head, working at the shop, I can't help but be intrigued.

At first glance, I assume Elodie is just another pretty face working at my grandfather's magic shop. With her sleek hair, mesmerizing green eyes, and curves in all the right places, it's hard not to be distracted by her stunning appearance. But as I soon discover, there's much more to Elodie than meets the eye.

Despite her alluring appearance, I assume Elodie is just another employee until I learn that she's actually a familiar, a magical creature bound to the shop and its owner. With Elodie's help, I discover that I have undiscovered magic powers, which I must master to save the people I love from the clutches of the enemy.

As if that weren't enough, I find myself face-to-face with a waifish, beautiful girl who wants to help even though she's supposed to be on the enemy side and a mysterious genie who wants to grant me my wishes. With the girls by my side, I navigate this new and dangerous world of magic, battling dark forces and uncovering the truth about my own heritage.

Will these beautiful, strange girls be able to help me unlock the secrets of the magic shop and save the little store—and my legacy—from certain doom, or will we fall prey to the forces of darkness that seek to destroy us?

Right up front before you read any further just know that I recommend this book to anybody thinking about giving it a shot. This is the first time I've come across this gentleman narrator, and he did a good job with his performance. Personally, I prefer deeper smoother voices, but this guy fits the character very well. I've never seen the lady narrator deliver less than a fantastic performance and I've enjoyed quite a few of her works over the years. This is the first time that I've come across this author. He has another trilogy completed and available in both eBook and audio should you get to the end of this one and be looking for more. The writing was solid all the way around. The main character for this story I instantly disliked from chapter one which is not necessarily a bad thing as a flawed character gives an author a lot of room to develop that character over the course of the story. This character we're introduced to shortly after he has left his bride to be holding the bag so to speak. He saw his whole life laid out in front of him and didn't like it, so he ran sort of. He appears to be an outcast from part of his family and is now taking over his grandfather's magical shop now that the man has passed away. We're introduced to a slimy competitor who's interested in buying the old timey world class customer service magic shop. Because in the big bads world everything's got a price. I don't want to risk spoiling anything for anybody giving this good deal a shot so I will simply say at this point well done to everybody who had a hand in bringing this story to us, the audiobook listeners.

The story itself was decent. Only decent though. There were a few parts that were a bit derivative of well known pop culture movies or tv shows which caused a bit of eye rolling. The "adult" scenes would have fared better if they were "fade to black" as the writing for them reminded me of a 15 year old boy in the 80s trying to write his own erotica with his only experience being what he's read in Penthouse forums in the two issues he stole from his older brother's secret stash.

The third book was done in a different style as well. It was actually weirdly confusing until about a quarter to half way through. I almost gave up on it. Had I not been at work where I was too busy to search for a new book to listen to, I probably would have.

The narration was difficult to listen to. The male voice seemed to have an occasional lisp or other speech impediment at times. There were also many MANY mispronounced words which really threw me out of the immersion.

The female narrator sounded like she was working in a completely different set of acoustics. They sounded muffled compared to the male which was really off putting. Her voices were pretty much all the same as well, other than using different accents. it sometimes made it hard to follow which character was speaking.

Another issue that really threw me off was the extraordinarily long pauses between chapters. It seemed like they were two to three time longer than normal. Many time I'd be reaching for my phone to see if the audio stopped before it would start again. Thirty minutes to an hour could probably be cut off the time if they were normal pauses.

Overall, I'd say to save your credits for something else to listen to. maybe buy the Kindle version to read if you really want to.

The story was okay, but the sub par narration took away from it.
