The book is a good start if you have no idea where to start. I like how they reenforce how important it is writing about your art. The examples are clear and insightful.

Wonderfully helpful!

This book deals with a painful topic. I sometimes feel a mass of emotions and anxieties when trying to write about my work. But the author handles the topic with clarity, confidence, and humor. The exercises help immensely. It really was exactly what I needed to hear, to say what I want to say!

A great book to all that one's interested in arts

Art-Write: The Writing Guide for Visual Artists by Vicki Krohn Amorose is amazing in various senses. The book reveals the great difficulty to write about art that the artists have. Amorose was a student with Rudolf Arnheim, the great theoric in art, and your writing reveals to us what are the principal's aspects of perception in the images and compositions in paintings, drawings and other contemporary art media. Indeed, this book can do more than this too: with your precise instructions and exercises, Art Write teaches to us, artists, how we can communicate with our public.

Buy the print version too

I own this book in print and got the Audible version to listen to while I work in the studio. I want to tell people the most valuable part of Art-Write is the writing exercises and you may want those in print. I saw one reviewer say the audiobook was "unbearable" and they must have a hangover or something - only the first 10 pages of the book talks about why artists need to write. whatever. I use this book to inspire me every time I need to say something about my paintings, in a talk or written form. All the artists I know have a hard time with writing and this book is good help!

Unbearable

I simply cannot finish listening to this. It's so repetitive and the author sounds so inexperienced and yet faking confidence through some semblance of judgemental humor. To sum up the first hour of listening: The author insists over and over why writing about art is important... sure, I agree, that's why I bought a book that was supposed to tell me how to write about art, there's absolutely no need for advertising the book over and over when I already have the damn thing, followed by multiple paragraphs saying " in this book you will learn how to write about your art" in slightly different ways each time. All this followed by bland advice such as "don't be repetitive, don't say the same thing 3 times, think about your audience" without any supporting examples. The writer should first work on their writing before teaching others, or at least read a few writing books and try to set themselves apart instead of regurgitating other writers' advice and claiming it's about "art writing".
