When her haunting past returns, will it destroy her future?
Lenora Fletcher brims with joy. Embracing motherhood, the young woman is determined to give her child the love and attention she never received. But a chance meeting with her presumed-dead father rips away her happiness and plunges her into roiling confusion.
Learning of her mother’s whereabouts in a sanitarium, Lenora visits her, hoping for closure after being abandoned as a child. But during the tumultuous trip, the distraught duchess is taken by surprise when a wayward spirit begs for her help.
As something wicked accompanies the request, will Lenora’s gift lead to a grisly end?
Asylum for a Duchess is the riveting third book in the Duchess of Blackmoore Mystery series.
If you like big-hearted heroines, haunting tales, and historical backdrops, you’ll love Nellie H. Steele’s taste of the supernatural.

First of all, the narrator did a great job, but she was clearly an older woman. It just didn't compute for me when the heroine of the story is only 18 years old. The only saving grace is that the story is told in first person, past tense. It allowed me to believe that the narrator was telling her life story- things that happened long ago. I have to say, however, she did make the husband, Robert, sound very short, clipped, and pompous, unfortunately. I didn't feel any emotion from him, despite the narrator's efforts.
As far as the stories go, each one has been very slow-going. For being some great detective who can speak to the dead, I found it frustrating that it took her so long to figure out some things that were actually quite obvious and predictable to any average joe. I did appreciate the element of spookiness without going too far into the horror genre; those are hard to find!
Now, as for the specifics of Book Three, Asylum for a Duchess:
This one was by far the spookiest of the first three, which made it even better in my opinion! It was so atmospheric, and that element really added to the storyline. It was also very graphic in some parts, so be aware of that if you tend to get queazy!
On a more disappointing note, I have to say I find more chemistry between Lenora and her brother-in-law, Edwin, than I do with Lenora and her husband Robert. If I didn't know any better, I'd predict an affair. However, even if Lenora fell in love with Edwin, she has too much integrity to cheat on her husband. That being said, since these books are clean and wholesome, we wouldn't see that happen anyway. It's a true shame that the author couldn't create this kind of chemistry with Lenora and Robert. The story itself was good, but the relationship between husband and wife continues to disappoint. I especially hate that Robert's answer for everything is to give Lenora a hot toddy and put her to bed. One can only "rest" so much!
