About this listen

The fairest flower in Mawbry is Erienne Fleming, the enchanting, raven-haired daughter of the village mayor. Charming, spirited, and exquisitely lovely, she is beset on all sides by suitors, any one of whom would pay a king's fortune for a place in her heart. But Erienne has eyes for only one: the dashing and witty young Yankee, Christopher Seton.

But marriage for love is not to be, for her irresponsible and unscrupulous father, crippled by gambling debts, is intent on auctioning off his beautiful daughter to the highest bidder. And in the end, Erienne is devastated to find it is the strange and secretive Lord Saxton who has purchased her—a mysterious, tragic figure who wears a mask and a cloak at all times to hide disfiguring scars gained in a terrible fire some years back.

But in the passing days, Saxton's true nature is revealed to her. A gentle and adoring soul, he treats his new bride with warmth and abiding tenderness, yet appears to her only by daylight. She, in turn, vows to be a good and loyal wife to him. And then Christopher Seton reenters Erienne's world.

Conflicted by emotions she cannot suppress, Erienne valiantly attempts to remain honorable to her elusive, enigmatic husband but feels herself irresistibly drawn to Seton's passion, his fire, and his secrets. Entangled in intrigues she doesn't yet understand, Erienne Fleming will soon have to make a devastating choice: between love and honor...between her duty and her heart.

long time favorite

I've read all of Ms. woodiwiss' books over and over again through the years, but this stood out as my favorite. I was excited to see it finally in audible... but VERY disappointed in the narration, most particularly the male voices and especially the hero's. I also could have done ENTIRELY without the new "forward". you know exactly what you are getting in this book: a historical view of male and female relationships and we don't need a "modern" diatribe about how "out of date" these historical fiction novels are. Skip the forward and lose yourself in enjoying this sensual classic!!!

Beauty and the Beast meets Princess Bride

Delightful. Satisfying. Entertaining. I adored this love story and as always, the talented Rosalyn Landor brings the characters to life. I’d recommend this as a must read for HR fans.

Outstanding Story!

One of my favorite books. Outstanding story. Did not care for the voice of Christopher in this audio performance, but still the story was well told. The book is great. Kathleen Woodiwiss is my favorite historical romance author.

Classic

I read this book many years ago. It was a good story then, and it’s a good story now. I like the humor and the spunkiness of the female lead, and I like the devotion and charm of the male lead. I hope you enjoy it as well. Who doesn’t love a classic love story?

When the heroine is in Nini, but the storyline is great

Part of the story the heroine sounds like a simpleton, especially in arguments. The hard life she lived up to the point of her marriage should have toughened her enough, and yet her childish arguments and weak nature was hard to bear. Overall, I really liked and enjoyed the book.

A New Favorite Author

This is my first novel by this author and I can say it is one of the best historical romance books I've ever read. I will definitely be purchasing all the books of hers that audible is releasing. The narrator is always excellent 👌🏻

Best book

This is my favorite all time book. It’s beauty and the beast meets zorro, and even though I always know what’s about to happen, it still makes me laugh out loud with pure glee. I love the romance and the characters, and Ms. Woodiwiss brings the story alive with her excellent writing.
