Publisher's summary

"I do not think I want to be married at all. I want to be rich. Very rich…."

When Henrietta Bascombe opens a confectionary shop in order to turn her pittance of an inheritance into a fortune, her friends are shocked to hear of such a well-bred lady going into trade. The earl of Carrisdown is both drawn to and repelled by her shop-girl status.

Undaunted, Henrietta proceeds to hang out the traditional confectioners' sign of a golden pineapple and soon finds a set of beautiful women in her employ, drawing the attention of Earl of Carrisdown's younger brother and best friend. Distressed by the situation, the Earl makes it his mission to put Henrietta out of business. But he looks forward to tangling with the fiery sweetshop owner more than he's willing to admit.

Great little read

Henrietta has a little inheritance and a dream. Her, a former teacher and two single girls of her village head off to London to open a confectionery. When the girls of the shop catch the eye of the Earl’s brother, he is then on a mission to destroy her shop and reputation.

Fun story

Humorous and witty enhanced by the excellent reader! . I love the female characters especially Harriet who's confidence and resistance to the social norms of the culture makes me want to stand up and cheer!!

Unique storyline

Although Marion Chesney tends to use many of the same descriptions in quite a few of her books, this one was slightly different, which made it more interesting. I like this narrator, though some spots were a little slow, so I speed up the rate a skosh.

Such an awesome story! Great climax and just awesome ending. Short and sweet but also with a little suspense.

Hasty ending

SPOILER ALERT

I liked the story. Typical of MC Beaton, the heroine is smart, strong willed, and resourceful. The hero was typical, nothing special. But the way the heroine forgives the hero at the end was inartful. It was as if the author reached a word limit and rushed to get to the HEA.

Pretty good until the end.

I was enjoying it like 3-3.5 stars and then that proposal at the end basically ruined it. Seriously. Marry me or I'll ring your neck...? Absolutely horrible. This narrator was pretty good.

Overall a Good Read

Interesting story and likable ladies, except one. And most of the gentlemen. Interesting premise although a little far fetched some of the time … but that’s true of most of the author’s books. Not her best but still ok. Lindy Nettleton as usual gave a stellar performance.

Marion Chesney (M. C. Beaton) AMAZING

I have listened to SO MANY of Marion’s novels (The Poor Relations, Edwardian Murder Mysteries, The Waverly Women…list goes on), she is amazing! It is sad we will have no more great novels from her. Marion you are a treasured author. June 10, 1936 - December 30, 2019 ❤️

Good eats

Great book. Loved it. Love is a funny thing when it hits unexpectedly as it did for the Lord. And the ladies being so brave to go out on their own.
