About this listen

While Augusta Hawke is a successful author of eighteen crime novels, since her husband's death, she's been living vicariously through her Jules Maigret-like detective Claude and his assistant Caroline. Then a handsome police detective appears investigating a real-life mystery.

Where are her neighbors, the Normans? No one has a clue what's happened—except Augusta. Although she isn't nosy, spending all day staring out the windows for inspiration means she does notice things. Like the Normans arguing. And that they've been missing a week.

Once the Normans' car is found abandoned, Augusta senses material for a bestseller and calls on the investigatory skills she's developed as a crime writer. But she soon uncovers long-hidden secrets and finds herself facing real-life dangers her characters never faced . . . ones she can't write her way out of.

Wry, Engaging, and Sparkling

Yet again G. M. Malliet shines. Augusta Hawke is at once the classic, overly curious amateur detective and the often wry, occasionally hilarious observer of both herself and the world around her. This mystery is cleverly woven and even though I guessed the twist, the journey was entirely enjoyable. Erin Dion is perfect as Augusta and I’m definitely hoping for future books.

Excellent mystery!

I greatly enjoyed G. M. Malliet's new mystery. Erin Dion read it as if she were casually telling a story to a good, trusted friend. This gave it a very approachable, every day feeling, which led the reader to identify with the characters. I won't say that the solution was shock, but so many of the characters felt real that it was hard to decide which possible solution would be the actual solution.

Prefer her other series

I truly struggled to stay with this one. I enjoyed her Max Tudor series and was pleased to find another Malliet. I do not like this main character very much and most definitely don't like the locatikn.

No more

The mystery was fairly good yet suffered from the inappropriate insertion of the f bomb. The narrator did a good job though the voice did not match the description of Augusta. With today's unattractive political arena, why set a book in the D.C. area? Not interested in a sequel.

Okay

This was not up to the standard I’ve come to expect from Mailliet. I’m not sure that I entirely like Augusta. Will I listen to the next in the series? Maybe. I’m addicted to finding out what happens to characters and maybe Augusta will grow on me.

The colorless of the narrator’s voice.

First person doesn’t work. The writer doesn’t inspire me to care about her and her angst or about her characters. Such a disappointment from her Max Tudor novels.
