A SWORD FORGED IN SHADOWS…

Theodore Kurita is the son of Takashi Kurita, and heir apparent to the Draconis Combine, one of the most powerful realms of the Inner Sphere. But the Draconis Combine has never been a place of smooth transitions. Historically, a Kurita proves himself a fit leader by a successful bid for power, political or...otherwise.

Theodore's perilous journey to power is a twenty-year odyssey, beginning with his graduation from Sun Zhang Military Academy. At each level of ascendancy, he finds that keeping power is far more difficult than getting it, and failure lies in wait at every turn. His tactical knowledge is put to the test all too many times. His successes in impossible situations are dismissed as smoke and mirror trickery by some, but lauded as genius by others.

Upon reaching the level of Deputy of the Combine Military, Theodore’s new power allows him to see the uncertain future of his people. He must plan carefully as he bargains for his future with ComStar, the mystic sect, and the yakuza, an interstellar network of organized crime. All the while maintaining an uneasy truce with the man he must one day depose...his own father, Coordinator of the Draconis Combine!

good finale to the first era of battletech fiction.

as a Stand-alone work, this one has flaws. it assumes prior knowledge of Charette's earlier work "Wolves on the Border" as well as Michael Stackpole's Warrior trilogy. at the time of this review, those books are not available on Audible.

Kozak and James are able to provide a variety of voices for the many characters who appear, but Kozak's narration is occasionally stilted and monotone. James's character voice work is particularly adept.

Fantastic story, exceptional voice work

Wonderful work from talented people. The story is a classic exploring the history of Theodore Kurita leading up to the Clan Invasion

I already have this story

They sell this book in a bundle with others for cheaper than this book alone…. They changed the voice actors for this one, it’s not bad, however the man who has been doing bt voice is the OG… I am just mad I wasted a credit for the exact same book, only difference I noticed was a seperate event, which I’m not entirely sure was in the old one or not. I could be wrong, I digress, this is the same book though!!!

Excellent book lack luster performance

One of my favorite books in the battletech universe. The story is excellent but the execution was not good. The male performer sounded like he was out of breath as the narrator but did a great job acting out the characters. The female performer was difficult to understand and had poor quality audio. I was overall disappointed with this purchase and I hope catalyst spends a little more time vetting the performance. There were several mispronunciations and you could almost tell the people performing don’t know battletech.

Great voice acting, definitely a cut above some of the previous battletech audiobooks

The story was very engaging and I liked having multiple voice actors. Would love to see more of this.

Inconsistent Narration

This is a good story brought down by the fact that neither narrator was consistent in pronunciations or character voices. With better editing and greater care given to the character portrayals both could be great additions to the Battletech narrators.

Good story but terrible pronunciation.

This is a great book and story marred by poor effort to correctly pronounce character names along with house names.

extremely inconsistent voices

Brian's narration is fine, but only Theodore and Takashi are consistent. Fuhito randomly has a southern accent then goes to low pitched, then high pitched. really disappointed he can't convey emotions or emphasis and he can't remember which voice is for who.

Charlie's narration was fine but same story. Only Constance and Tomoe are consistent, she can't remember which voice is for who. She picks an English accent, then tries to speak German, it's just a mess.

This doesn't hold a candle to the abridged version voice work let alone any of the full books.

I was really hoping this meant more battletech books, but the bar was set really high with Tren Sparks and Christopher Graybill. Catalyst needs to step up their game and pay these men what their worth or audition more people.
