About this listen

A Warhammer 40,000 Novel

Night has fallen on the prison world of Zartak. Renegades from the Imperium's dawn stalk the complex, delivering pain and death. Yet something just as dangerous awaits them: the brutal, predatory, but ultimately loyal Space Marine Chapter known as the Carcharodons.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

It's a gripping tale, as stalking Night Lords face the Imperium's most predatory Space Marines in a darkened prison – with wardens and convicts caught in the middle.

THE STORY

On the prison world of Zartak, darkness has fallen on arbitrators and inmates alike. The Night Lords have come, bringing with them the shadow of fear and pain. But these monsters are not the only ones with an interest in Zartak. From the void, running on silent, another fleet emerges.

These Space Marine warriors are grey-clad and white-faced, and their eyes are as black as the Outer Dark – the savage Carcharodon Astra. As two packs of ancient, merciless predators stalk the shadows of the prison colony, both seeking a single young inmate with unnatural talents, the corridors run red, and both factions will have to fight tooth and claw to leave Zartak alive.

Heard of the Charcharodons before, but was under the impression they skirted the line of heretics. Especially considering the brutality of Tiberos. This story shows them in a better light as skillful hunters and those loyal to the Emperor. Interesting matchup between them and the Night Lords.

Feels like some 40k books try to do to much but this one does a great job of creating a great battle with solid characters.

Solid and classic 40k

Exactly as the title says. McNiven helps flesh out what little I didn’t know about the Carchardons and their chapter workings. Putting them up against a Nightlords warband was so great and a grisly battle between two factions known for their unrestrained violence. Highly recommended (make sure to read the short story “The Reaping Time” first, and don’t ever bother with “Silent Hunters”, McNiven is the only person that should write Space Shark fiction)

A fantastic exploration of Space Shark lore

I really loved the way the author created rich lore for the carcharadons, mostly exhibiting it through their actions and leaving enough mystery to keep it interesting. It was so cool to see the similarities between traitor and loyalist chapters. A solid start!

Duality of Space Marines

Honestly, got it because it was 90% off. Was surprised by how much i enjoyed the story. Not nearly as predictable and characters not one dimensional like a lot of “space marine” stories. Went ahead and got “Outer Darkness” as well after finishing this one because I enjoyed it so much.

Surprisingly good!

What stood out to me the most is the night lords surprise at the Sharks silence in combat, it was eery to them.

Though the book itself maybe isn’t stand out, I have to say that Shogo Miyakita’s performance was one of the best I’ve heard from a Black Library book. Really exceptional and worth the listen!

A fantastic performance of a good book

Excellent narration of space marine versus traitor battle. Significantly grim, dark story. Greatly enjoyed!

Was a great 40k story. Wonderfully vivid descriptions and very interesting characters. Definitely one of the better Space Marine stories.

Amazing reading. Audio direction is great and does a wonderful job of conveying character and emotion.

compelling story about a really cool chapter of space marines. the dynamic between the quiet but brutal carcharodons against the more savage and taunting night lords made for a great contrast.

Great listen
