About this listen

An imperfect hero for an imperfect time. For generations, Riker men have been the best of the best. For the Battleborn that comes with a cost.

I spit out the blood in my mouth. I had to give the other guy credit. That was a fine right hook. Every bit as good as my mom used to give me. Of course, the best right hooks were the ones I landed on the other guy rather than the ones the other guy landed on me. My dear departed mother had always taught me it was better to give than receive. It’s unlikely that her cherished advice was meant to apply to bar fights but then she wasn’t a big fan of bars or fights in general. My name is Tad Riker. I serve as a tactical weapons officer for the Wolves. I'm Battleborn.

I received this Audiobook for free. My opinions are my own.

This book was a pleasant surprise, in that it was better than the average book I find being given away for free. I quite enjoyed the MCs humorous narrative voice (it's difficult for me to like a book if I don't enjoy "spending time with" the main characters). And the level of military action & description of violence wasn't too graphic for this whimpy listener. I do wish we had gotten more character development, but hopefully that will come in the sequels.

This is not a romance, but there are minor romantic elements.

The narration was good and matched the story well.

Better than expected

Narration was good; although range was not a wide of some that I have heard.

The story itself is also pretty good; if a tad on the short side. The fidelity to military concepts and culture was rock solid, but that also means the potential for over the top action was limited (which is strange to say, because I don't usually go for that, but this story was so true to form that at times it was completely predicatable ... which is totally what you want on a battlefield, but doesn't always create the conflict you need in a good story). Still, it is absolutely worth a listen.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
