Publisher's summary

When called to do battle many light years from home, the first Marine Interstellar Expeditionary Unit rose to the challenge - and now thousands of enslaved humans have been freed from the alien yoke. But Earth is 21 years older than the home planet they originally left, and the Marines need time to retrain and readjust - time they do not have, due to the bizzare disappearance of a detachment of their brothers- and sisters-in-arms. It is a mystery, but there is a starting point: an ancient wormhole threading through the Sirius system. Whatever waits on the other side must be confronted, with stealth, with force, and without fear - be it an ancient enemy or a devastating new threat.

The Marines are heading into the perilous unknown...and what transpires there could reshape the universe for millennia to come.

Love it a great read

I love this book and all the others. I have to place this book series in the top 5 for space operas. I especially like how he was able to tie things in with ancient times and make it rather believe and not to far fetched. Keep them coming please.

Excellent

I really liked the incorporation of sci-fi tech predicted from modern technology. Best predictive fiction I've seen in a long time.

fast paced and interesting take on ancient aliens

Tight military centered, action. Veterans will be able to relate to the portrayal of corporate executives and civilians. The story ties together many ancient alien astronaut legends in an entertaining way.

Ray Chase for narrator!

The storyline is outstanding! Narrator is absolutely ill-suited for the genre and the story. Go back to the original trilogy narrator, Ray Chase.

getting better

Drummond has gotten much better. some marines still sound like Muppets, but most of the voice acting is improving

Tried it but

What did you like best about Battlespace? What did you like least?

I tried the first two books and wanted it to be good. I was turned off by the constant mentions of weird comments about religion and very little action. Reader was okay but only one voice. I finally got bored.

Would you recommend Battlespace to your friends? Why or why not?

No just not my type of scifi book.

What aspect of David Drummond’s performance would you have changed?

Using several voices would be good.

Did Battlespace inspire you to do anything?

no

Repetitive, with some interesting concepts

If I hadn’t have gotten the trilogy at one time, I would not have listened past book one. This book improves a bit with some interesting deep dives into hard sci-fi concepts, like asking what’s it like to travel for decades and return to an Earth that’s at a completely different cultural and political place? I also dug the effort at creating unique aliens, and the attention to detailing their features.

Sadly, there is still little attention to character backstories, personalities, or looks. You mostly get a litany of names and ranks before moving right on to what they did in battle. The dialogue is flat. There wasn’t a single character I invested in.

There’s also a repeat of many formula bits from book 1:
-The rabid use of military acronyms, down to minutiae like T.I.G. (Time in Grade)
-Did you hear “the joke about encasing marines in glass”? Yeah, in both books
-You’ll die of alcohol poisoning if you drink every time a “noumenal (sp?) link” is mentioned
