Publisher's summary

Is it "just a phase," or could your child be headed for serious trouble?

If you sense that your child is seriously troubled, you may feel bewildered, helpless, ineffective. How can you stop your child from throwing away his or her life? How can you avoid thinking that you've failed as a parent? In this newly revised and expanded edition of the classic guide Before It's Too Late, clinical psychologist Stanton E. Samenow explains how to break the useless cycle of blame and take corrective action.

Topics include:

  • How to understand the personality of the antisocial child
  • How to tell the difference between a "phase" and a pattern of misbehavior
  • How to identify the seven common manifestations of antisocial behavior
  • How to cope more effectively as the parent of an older antisocial child
  • How to avoid the six common mistakes that prevent parents from taking action
  • How to step in-early and effectively-before bad behavior becomes entrenched

An eye opener

I would recommend this book to every parent that feels like their child’s behavior is spinning out of control with no idea how to stop the freight train. Identifying your child’s issue is just the beginning but at least you have a place to start

Finally

My husband and I have adopted three children, two of whom fit the bill of the antisocial child described in this book. I was brought to tears listening to this book that so accurately illustrated my life.

Parents need this support. Stop the guilt, Learn.

God gave children a free will. You can only mold it. You cannot take it or make the decisions for them. I had five children. 1 and occasionally 2 ruled the house. This would have given me the understanding I needed. It may have reduced the amount of stress and spankings I had to give, which may not have been as fruitful as it should have been as I see some low self esteem in one of them.

They all did very well as adults in work environments despite the fact that 6 out of 7 occupants of our home had. ADD or ADHD, and I was homeschooling! To make things worse we had extended family members who were antisocial. God had mercy on us.

Now the grandchildren will hopefully benefit from this book.

A must read for anyone working with kids.

Amazingly Informational and Instantly Applicable

Tons of wonderful helpful info to be learned from this book. Happened to take a chance on it because my 7year old girl has refused for the entirety of the summer to even help clean her room. Her response to no tablet time, TV, etc timeouts, was always either "I don't care" or crying and pouting tantrum with nothing productive. Even to the point where I was picking the toys off the floor putting them in a trash bag to "donate". The major thing that helped from the book was explaining to her about how she was in control, and it is because she is not taking care of her toys and picking up that she wasn't going to have any stuff to play with. She would help clean up and be good for a short while until making up excuses to procrastinate. All it took was reminding her of why she is doing things, what happens if she does or doesn't, and how she is in control of what happens. Seems obvious in retrospect, but we don't know what we don't know till we know. Worked wonders, and definitely will have tons of info be applicable in the coming years!
