About this listen
From one of the hottest stand-up comedians, Nate Bargatze brings his everyman comedy to book form in this hilarious collection of personal stories, opinions, and confessions.
Nate Bargatze used to be a genius. That is, until the summer after seventh grade when he slipped, fell off a cliff, hit his head on a rock, and “my skull got, like, dented or something.” Before this accident, he dreamed of being “an electric engineer, or a doctor that does brain stuff, or a math teacher who teaches the hardest math on earth.” Afterwards, all he could do was stand-up comedy.* But the “brain stuff” industry’s loss is everyone else’s gain because Nate went on to become one of today’s top-grossing comedians, breaking both attendance and streaming records.
In his highly anticipated first book, Nate talks about life as a non-genius. From stories about his first car (named Old Blue, a clunky Mazda with a tennis ball stick shift) and his travels as a Southerner (Northerners like to ask if he believes in dinosaurs), to tales of his first apartment where he was almost devoured by rats and his many debates with his wife over his chores, his diet, and even his definition of “shopping.” He also reflects on such heady topics as his irrational passion for Vandy football and the mysterious origins of sushi (how can a California roll come from old-time Japan?).
BIG DUMB EYES is full of heart. It will make listeners laugh out loud and nod in recognition, but it probably won’t make them think too much.
*Nate’s family disputes this entire story.

Story
In A Kid from Marlboro Road, past and present intermingle as family stories are told and retold. The narrative careens between the prior generation’s colorful sojourns in the Bronx and Hell’s Kitchen and the softer world of Gibson, the town on Long Island where they live now. There are scenes in the Rockaways, at Belmont racetrack, and in Montauk. Edward Burns’s buoyant first novel is a bildungsroman, yet out of one boy’s story a collective warmth emerges, a certain kind of American tale, raucous and joyous.

Story
This book weaves together stories of the many dogs Elias has been lucky enough to know, both in his personal life and while doing his Dogist work. Told in a light tone that does not shy away from more serious issues (Elias is not above the occasional sentimental moment or dog pun), this book charmingly explores the ways that dogs are not just our family and our friends but also irreplaceable beings capable of generating boundless love and restoring balance to our lives.

Story
Most people don’t even notice them—three tiny figures sitting at the end of a long pier in the corner of one of the most famous paintings in the world. Most people think it’s just a depiction of the sea. But Louisa, an artist herself, knows otherwise and she is determined to find out the story of these three enigmatic figures. Twenty-five years earlier, in a distant town, a group of teenagers find refuge from their difficult home lives by spending their days laughing and telling stories out on a pier.

Story
In November 1999, Joan Didion began seeing a psychiatrist because, as she wrote to a friend, her family had had “a rough few years.” She described the sessions in a journal she created for her husband, John Gregory Dunne. For several months, Didion recorded conversations with the psychiatrist in meticulous detail. The initial sessions focused on alcoholism, adoption, depression, anxiety, guilt, and the heartbreaking complexities of her relationship with her daughter, Quintana. The subjects evolved to include her work, which she was finding difficult to maintain for sustained periods.

Since his first performance at the legendary New York nightclub “Catch a Rising Star” as a 21-year-old college student in fall of 1975, Jerry Seinfeld has written his own material and saved everything. “Whenever I came up with a funny bit, whether it happened on a stage, in a conversation, or working it out on my preferred canvas, the big yellow legal pad, I kept it in one of those old school accordion folders,” Seinfeld writes. “So I have everything I thought was worth saving from 45 years of hacking away at this for all I was worth.”

Audiobook is the way to go
I enjoyed this so much; to me it has the same vibe as the Nateland podcast. More like a conversation (ok, a one-way conversation), like a visit or a catch-up phone call with a friend. Loved the family stories that always make me think, man what was going on in the 70s and 80s that made all our parents just…cuckoo?! Absolutely recommend— looking fwd to seeing live in Chatt!

Nate is the best.
Hello folks!
I read Big Dumb Eyes in one day—and not because it was short, but because I genuinely couldn’t put it down. Nate Bargatze’s humor translates seamlessly from stage to page. Every chapter feels like you’re sitting in a room with him, listening to one hilarious story after another, told with that classic dry wit and down-to-earth charm he’s known for.The book is packed with self-deprecating tales, quirky observations, and the kind of honest reflections that make you laugh and think at the same time. Whether you’re a longtime fan of his stand-up or just looking for a feel-good, laugh-out-loud read, this book delivers.Highly recommend if you need a good escape and a reminder not to take life too seriously.

Absolutely The Biggest Dumb Eyes!
There’s nothing the book has on this audio especially if y’all don’t like “wordy” books. Hearing Nate talk about his life in his Southern accent is a great way to pass an afternoon pulling weeds & as an avid Gardner & Master Audio Listener, I mean that with the utmost respect. I would listen to Nate read my grocery list, emails, or even War & Peace. (No disrespect to the Mrs.) I highly recommend “Big Dumb Eyes” and look forward to the next audio book when Mate finds more silly things to fill it with.
