About this listen

This hilarious and thoughtful memoir from comedy legend Anjelah Johnson explores questions of identity, belonging, and her two dreams as a kid: to be an actress and to be a chola.

You may know Anjelah Johnson for her viral sketch "Nail Salon" (over 100 million views globally) or her beloved ghetto-fabulous MadTV character Bon Qui Qui, but it's her clean humor and hilarious storytelling that make her one of the most successful stand-up comedians and actresses today.

With her razor-sharp wit, Anjelah recounts funny stories from her journey - from growing up caught between two worlds (do chips and salsa go with potato salad?) to unexpectedly embracing faith (“I love Jesus, but I will punch a ‘ho”) to her many adventures in dating (she may or may not have accepted dates simply for the food). Through it all, Anjelah transforms from a suburban-adjacent kid with Aquanet-drenched hair into a devoted Christian who abstains from drinking and premarital sex, into a mall-famous Oakland Raiders cheerleader, and then an actually famous comedian traveling the world and meeting people from all-walks of life, including Oprah. No biggie. (Huge biggie.) As she travels the world, Anjelah has eye-opening experiences, and she morphs from square, rigid Anjelah into “Funjelah”, and learns that she can still ride with Jesus without squashing the other parts of her personality.

Anjelah's stories explore subjects such as navigating your racial identity, finding your place in the world, chasing your crazy dreams, embracing the messiness of an evolving faith, and searching for belonging and meaning. Through her journey, Anjelah gets closer to discovering her true identity and encourages listeners to have the audacity to dream big.

As a Mexican American Christian I felt like family! But you don’t have to share ethnicity to enjoy her book. So much sincerity as Anjelah reveals herself in truth and in honor to her family and to our Jesus.
Don’t miss out giving yourself a gift!

Angela Johnson-Reyes is one of my favorite comedians. Her book is engaging and well written. I love how she is so down to earth and her love for God. I learned so many positive things about her life and how she dealt with real issues. Definitely recommend to all.

I didn't really follow Anjelah but I saw her book at a Barnes and Noble checked to see if it was on Audible. I was so pleasantly surprised to know she was so religious. I feel like there needs to be more Christians like her that are uplifting without judgement. Loved this book. already shared it with a coworker

I heard an interview on wild 94.9 in San Jose on the morning show the other morning on my way to work talking to Anjelah Johnson-Reyes about her book. I wasn’t sure what to expect but this book gave me way more than I expected. What an awesome book! Thank you Anjelah for sharing your experiences with the world.

Thats with an ! Mark ehh! I enjoyed every bit of your book girl! I saw you at your recent Nashville show with my lil sissy and thats how I heard of your book. Being a Latina from the Valley from Cali living in Nashville myself for the past 20yrs, I knew I had to hear your story! It did not disappoint. Thank you for being every version of you, and openly stepping into the next creation of you in your new city! Moving from L.A. to the ‘ville was for sho’ a culture shock in 2000 but now I love it here… I just stay in my side of the natures trail! Lol

Love!
