About this listen

A genderbent retelling of the classic fairytale Rapunzel...

When Rapunzel finally gathers the courage to leave his tower he triggers a booby trap spell that transports him to the Heroes’ Labyrinth. Armed only with his magic hair he’s thrown into a dangerous, subterranean world where undead monsters are constantly trying to eat or kill him. Rapunzel discovers that the only way to leave the Labyrinth is to beat it.

Necromancer Gothel created the Labyrinth as a test to find a "true hero". Each level has a Boss Monster, which must be defeated before a hero can proceed to the next level. Rapunzel has to make it past Zombie Frankie Stein, Insectoid Queen Khepera, Dark Elf Queen Norebo, and Vampire Queen Draculara before he can reach the final level where Gothel resides.

During his quest to forge an enchanted sword powerful enough to defeat Demon King Gothel, Rapunzel encounters the volatile alter ego of Dr. Henrietta Jekyll - Edwina Hyde. "Hydie" is a powerful witch with an affinity for wind elemental magic. She tries to capture Rapunzel and return him to his tower. After saving Hydie’s life, however, Rapunzel is able to convince Hydie to make a temporary truce so that they can team up and increase their chances of survival.

As Rapunzel and his new ally fight side by side the blacksmith starts to admire Hydie for her strength and bravery while he begins to appreciate Henrietta for her brilliant, scientific mind that gets them out of several predicaments without the use of brute force. Rapunzel ends up falling in love with both women even though they couldn’t be more different from one another.

Unfortunately, in Fantasia a hero is destined to kill the villain and save the woman he loves. Does this mean Rapunzel is destined to kill Hydie in order to save Henrietta? Rapunzel is determined to protect both women, but...

Who will survive the Heroes’ Labyrinth?

Blacksmith Rapunzel

If you enjoy fairy tales with a twist you will enjoy this one. The author gives listeners a new world where the characters that we are used to be women and in need of saving are all men who are strong and fighting their own battles. This is Rapunzel’s story, and he must figure out a way to win over evil and save the kingdom while figuring his emotions and his own family secrets.

This is an engaging listen. The author does a good job of pulling you in and keeping you entertained. Not only do we get Rapunzel in this story, but we also get glimpses at his good friends and along for the ride is a Jekyll / Hyde character. This world is full of interesting people and adventures. I loved Rapunzel he is a great character, and his adventures make a great addition to this series. Narrator L. A. Johnson does a good job of bringing these characters and their world to life. Listeners feel the emotions and are pulled into the story.

Genderbent Fairytales Collection, Book 8

Narrated by: L.A. Johnson
Series: Genderbent Fairytales Collection, Book 8
Length: 9 hrs and 54 mins

I listened to this book at 1.55X

FYI. This book is Part 2 to "read after "Ashe and the Glass Sword"
." THIS IS ADULT FAIRTALES..NOT FOR UNDER 18.

If you like the t.v. Series "Once upon a time" adult fairtales you'll love this series.

It doesn't stick to one Fairytale line, it mixs different tales together.

Remember it's Genderbent . Its kind of cool.

Very enjoyable listen.

And L.A. Johnson does a great job bring the story to life.

What a unique retelling and wonderful spin on the fairytale.

I love the way she puts a new spin on fairytales. She has a fantastic way of telling a story. It’s well written and narrated. Her fairytale always has an intriguing ray of characters. Her books are always an extremely interesting adventure.
The narrator does a fantastic job with the characters and voices of each character making it easy to distinguish between the characters.
I definitely recommend this book!

Great Story

I really enjoyed this book. Loved Rapunzel’s reluctancy into being a hero. The characters and creatures drawn through the story are well thought out. I almost wish there were more Gothel. But all in all a great escapist story.

Here in Fantasia true love conquers all - Gothel

Did the story keep me engaged: yes
Was there anything I found annoying: no
Did I feel an emotional connection to the characters: yes
Would I listen to it again: yes

Action packed with good pace and lots of fun and interesting characters. Another well constructed story with vivid detail, world building and character development. I'm a real fan of these books, each book improves over its predecessor as the series has progressed - they could sit on the darker side of fantasy, but they don't - even though they are primarily hero v's villain, I find them light and fun.

I enjoyed the snark and banter in Rapunzel's story and Henrietta Jekyll / Edwina Hyde was a great character ... I enjoy the construction of the magic - it allows you to cut off the wings of a dead demon, stitch them to somebody else and they can get up, use the wings immediately and continue on as if nothing out of the ordinary has happened - awesome! 🤣.

L. A. Johnson's narration throughout this series gets better with each story. This book has a variety of characters, both new and old, he has maintained consistency with past characters and given appropriate voices to the new ones, I had no problem distinguishing who was speaking and thought he did a good job at bringing the book to life.

------
📌 Where does it fall on my personal scale? 8

• 1 not my thing • 2 didn't like the narration • 3 didn't keep my attention • 4 was good, but once was enough • 5 enjoyed it • 6 will listen again if i'm in the mood for the narrator • 7 goes on the "re-listen" list • 8 kept me up past bed-time • 9 recommended to family/friends • 10 own it in multiple formats • 11 keep a copy with me at all times

What a vivid imagination!

Kurokoneko is a master genderbent storyteller that has a fascinating imagination. Her fairytales consist of a cast of familiar characters that have opposite roles, creatures that normally aren't alive, vivid descriptions, characters that show so much development, lots of action and fight scenes, and some explosively hot love scenes. This is an adult fairy tale. You won't have time to get bored! The narrator gives us excellent male and female voices. He brings out the emotions of these characters and brings the story to life. This is a fun read that you will enjoy.
