About this listen
How have millions of American Christians come to measure spiritual progress in terms of their financial status and physical well-being? How has the movement variously called Word of Faith, Health and Wealth, Name It and Claim It, or simply prosperity gospel come to dominate much of our contemporary religious landscape? Kate Bowler's Blessed is the first book to fully explore the origins, unifying themes, and major figures of a burgeoning movement that now claims millions of followers in America. Bowler traces the roots of the prosperity gospel: from the touring mesmerists, metaphysical sages, pentecostal healers, business oracles, and princely prophets of the early 20th century; through mid-century positive thinkers like Norman Vincent Peale and revivalists like Oral Roberts and Kenneth Hagin; to today's hugely successful prosperity preachers. Bowler focuses on such contemporary figures as Creflo Dollar, pastor of Atlanta's 30,000-member World Changers Church International; Joel Osteen, known as "the smiling preacher", with a weekly audience of seven million; T. D. Jakes, named by Time magazine one of America's most influential new religious leaders; Joyce Meyer, evangelist and women's empowerment guru; and many others. At almost any moment, day or night, the American public can tune in to these preachers - on TV, radio, podcasts, and in their megachurches - to hear the message that God desires to bless them with wealth and health. Bowler offers an interpretive framework for scholars and general listeners alike to understand the diverse expressions of Christian abundance as a cohesive movement bound by shared understandings and common goals.

Acclaimed author Karen Swallow Prior examines evangelical history, both good and bad. By analyzing the literature, art, and popular culture that has surrounded evangelicalism, she unpacks some of the movement's most deeply held concepts, ideas, values, and practices to consider what is Christian rather than merely cultural. The result is a clearer path forward for evangelicals amid their current identity crisis—and insight for others who want a deeper understanding of what the term "evangelical" means today.

Story
As a twenty-three-year-old singer and the soon-to-be wife of youth pastor Joshua Harris, nothing in Shannon Harris's secular upbringing prepared her to enter the world of conservative Christianity. Soon Joshua's bestselling book I Kissed Dating Goodbye helped inspire a national purity movement, and Shannon's identity became "pastor's wife." The Woman They Wanted recounts Shannon's remarkable experience inside Big Church—where she was asked to live within a narrow definition of womanhood for almost two decades—and her journey out of that world and into a more authentic version of herself.

Story
How did a libertine who lacks even the most basic knowledge of the Christian faith win 81 percent of the white evangelical vote in 2016? And why have white evangelicals become a presidential reprobate's staunchest supporters? Jesus and John Wayne is a sweeping account of the last 75 years of white evangelicalism, showing how American evangelicals have worked for decades to replace the Jesus of the Gospels with an idol of rugged masculinity and Christian nationalism.

Story
Is there a new reformation happening in the church? It depends on who you ask. The New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) is a popular and fast-growing new movement of Christians who emphasize signs and wonders, and teach that God is giving new revelation through new apostles and prophets. But is this biblical Christianity? In Counterfeit Kingdom, apologists and NAR experts Holly Pivec and Douglas Geivett show how the NAR’s key tenets distort the gospel, twist the Scriptures, are influenced by New Age practices, and lead faithful Christians to shipwreck their faith.

Story
We tend to think of Advent as the season of anticipation before Christmas—and while it is that, it's also much more. Throughout its history, the church has observed Advent as a preparation not only for the first coming of Christ in his incarnation but also for his second coming at the last day. It's also about a third coming: the coming of Christ to meet us in our present moment, to make us holy by his Word and Sacrament. Priest and writer Tish Harrison Warren explores all three of these "comings" of Christ and invites us into a deeper experience of the first season of the Christian year.

Story
American evangelical Christianity has lost its way. While the witness of the church before a watching world is diminished beyond recognition, congregations are torn apart over Donald Trump, Christian nationalism, racial injustice, sexual predation, disgraced leaders, and covered-up scandals. Left behind are millions of believers who counted on the church to be a place of belonging and hope. As greater and greater numbers of younger Americans bleed out from the church, even the most rooted evangelicals are wondering, “Can American Christianity survive?”

Alisa Childers never thought she would question her Christian faith. She was raised in a Christian home, where she had seen her mom and dad feed the hungry, clothe the homeless, and love the outcast. She had witnessed God at work and then had dedicated her own life to leading worship as part of the popular Christian band ZOEgirl. All that was deeply challenged when she met a progressive pastor who called himself a hopeful agnostic. Another Gospel? describes the intellectual journey Alisa took over several years as she wrestled with a series of questions.

Engrossing History of the Prosperity Gospel
BLESSED traces the Prosperity Gospel from its earliest roots. Kate Bowler not only wrote a very thorough account but she was also easy to follow and listen to in the Audible version. One thing that amazed me is how the prosperity message has seeped into so many facets of today's church. Tracing links to New Thought philosophy and showing how these ideas were adapted over time, the book peels back the facelift that prosperity teachers keep inventing.
Bowler's tone is not cynical or looking down on her subject, but gently questioning, wanting to see the best and going to where the facts lead. This made her account compelling and engrossing in the way her research unfolded.
There are a few minor glitches, like her surprise about one church calling its drug and alcohol ministry "Celebrate Recovery" while one click of on-line research would reveal that Celebrate Recovery is a national ministry with several hundred chapters that was launched by Saddleback Church more than a decade ago.
This history of the Prosperity movement a must read for pastors, church history lovers, and those who wish to understand the pros and cons of the Prosperity Gospel.

For Brave and Thoughtful individuals
If you think the prosperity gospel is far removed from your faith, this book will challenge that thinking. For those committed to the prosperity gospel this book provides its history as well as its strengths and weaknesses. This is not a “feel good” treatise or a self help book. It is a book that will prompt deep reflection, honestly and hopefully a more mature faith.

Thorough and balanced scholarly review of the prosperity gospel
In addition to being well researched and thoroughly read what I appreciate about this book is that Dr. Bowler tries to stay balanced and fairly unbiased in her arguments OK. This is not an attack manual on the prosperity gospel but a detailed history on how the prosperity gospel grew out of the Pentecostal movement and developed into its own segment of the Christian faith. The book is very well written and references a wealth of literature that will give you insight to the key figures historical account and analyses that have previously been done on the topic.no matter how you feel about the prosperity theology I think this book would be of value to you as in a give you insights into how to develop what a lot of the believe sign and how followers of the theology do you Christianity through the lens of the prosperity gospel.

loved the history and it's revealing nature to this large movement that focuses on stuff and not a relationship with God

Excellent and accurate review of a movement-
I laughed, gasped, cried and shouted AMEN at Kate’s humorous but all too true assessment of the Prosperity Gospel phenomenon! It was like a walk down memory lane for me, as I grew up as a Christian through this avenue of Christianity. As she spoke of many of the ministers and ministries it warmed my heart to remember my roots and the journey along the way. Suspect the Spirit led me out of that as I began to question the veracity and Biblical basis for that preaching. No judgment I just didn’t belong there anymore. Thank you Kate for your candor, your thorough, strong and scholarly approach. I grew richly spiritually through the strong discipline and teaching while learning the Word and under these preachers. People in that movement believe that they are right and belong there. The Spirit knows our hearts and honors our motives. What a book!!! Could listen to it over and over!!

A thorough history of the Prosperity Movement
I was hoping this book would include a critique of doctrines followed by Prosperity gospel teaching. It was more of a thorough and neutral history of the Movement. It will still be a valuable resource as it provides details about various ministries and leaders not covered by other writers.

Interesting read
I enjoyed this excepting the liberal political views unnecessarily added by the author. Systemic racism is a farce that denies the real cultural issues and personal responsibility. The work is still worth reading.
