About this listen

'Heather is a bright star in the world of gangland writing...Read it, you won't be disappointed' Jacqui Rose

When you’re running the streets, loyalty is everything…

Gangs rule the streets of the rough Gallowburn Estate in Glasgow, but the deepest rivalry of all is between Jamie Gray and his friends, known as the Blood Brothers, and their enemies, the Lawsons.

The two gangs clash frequently, but when a phone containing incriminating evidence disappears after a particularly brutal run-in, the stakes are higher than ever.

Jamie’s mother Jackie is as hard as nails and is not going to let anyone hurt her boy – even if she has to roll up her sleeves and get stuck in. What she wants more than anything though, is to see Jamie turn his back on the street life. And when he meets spoilt rich-girl Allegra, who has a penchant for shoplifting, Jackie thinks she could be Jamie’s way out.

But with the Lawsons closing in, and everyone taking sides, there is only one way out for Jamie, and to triumph he must take out his biggest enemy…

I Didn't Hate It

I downloaded this selection from the Plus Catalogue when I saw Angus King was the narrator. And he does an outstanding job. Listeners will be familiar with his work from the JD Kirk DCI Logan series (et al), also set in Scotland. But that is about all the books have in common.

This book had moments and potential but ultimately wasn't sure what it wanted to be. The first part was about class struggle and poverty and was mildly interesting. The rich, beautiful girlfriend is introduced to further highlight the disparity. Poor girl would rather be at the poverty ridden council home where love is abundant than in her estate house where her troubled, cold father is too controlling...Then it becomes a detective story with a decently developed story line. Although the decision to bring the cops in when said beauty goes missing, flies in the face of earlier protests of No Cops on the council stuff. And then the story ends with the silliest, yet predictable, wrap up ever.

Throughout the story, plot points are questionable. Wouldn't a character whose father is so controlling that he calls her randomly throughout the day and asks to speak to waiters and is know as corrupt and amoral, bribe therapists and bug rooms?

I think this is the first in a series so I expect that could explain the selective character development. For free, it was an easy distraction while I did yard work. I don't think I'll look for the others in the series, however.Maybe if they too show up in Plus...

This book is a delight.

Absolutely fantastic. Really loved this book with it's colourful characters, humour and whitty banter. The narrater was brilliant.
