Deep in the Appalachian Mountains, a monstrous evil rises, and the only one who can stand against it is a teen-age witch who doesn't believe in magic.
Grieving and lost after the death of her parents, Jenny Morgan is sent to West Virginia to live with an aunt she's never met. It's there that Jenny is confronted with an unbelievable family heritage of witchcraft and magic - something she immediately dismisses as old-fashioned superstitions. However, once her new home is threatened by deadly horrors straight out of myth and folklore, her aunt's stories become impossible to ignore.
Now Jenny and her three new friends - friends with dark secrets all their own - are the only ones who stand a chance of stopping the growing evil, but only if Jenny can embrace her arcane heritage. Little does Jenny know that wielding her power will attract the attention of an even greater evil - the same immortal entity her parents died to protect her from.

I absolutely loved this book and can not wait until the next installment!
Although the characters are all in their teens, this book is for adults & teens alike!
A witch (Jenny), a giant slayer (Jack), a shifter (Jessabelle) and a medium (Sean).
The story starts with Jenny who is devastated over the loss of her parents who have died in a car accident. Jenny is just about to graduate when her Aunt Hattie comes to help her make arrangements and to take Jenny back home with her to Blood Creek (Maple Bend). Jenny is then thrown into a mythical world that brings her to meet her new friends Jack, Jessabelle & Sean.
This story is about 4 teens that are coming of age and learning how their powers work.
The 4 teens are in a race against a powerful witch (Evelyn) to find the gate and to figure out how to make their way through said gate. Once they figure out how to get through the gate Jenny meets her grandmother who protects the gate on the other side. Where the battles continue.
I found the characters to be well thought out and intriguing as well as entertaining. Once I started listening to this book I didn't want to put it down!
Although there is no cliffhanger to speak of in this book, it definitely sets the story up for the next book.
I can't wait to continue on with the next book!
A must read!!

I was immediately taken with Jenny’s story after seeing what happened with her parents. I was a bit confused at the beginning with the multiple POVs but once I got it nailed down, it was all good.
The folklore, and the paranormal elements were put together very well. The details were vivid and I felt like I was there with the gang fighting the creatures.
Overall it was a enjoyable listen. The narrator was okay, but I struggled a bit with which character she was portraying.
I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys reading folklore urban fantasy in West Virginia.

The world building was really well done, I spent the whole book picturing everything that was happening. The book came alive for me.
The characters are well crafted and feel whole and real, their actions seem natural and they're easy to connect with.
Thoroughly entertaining this book left me wanting more even thought the story ends at a good stopping point. I enjoyed my glimpse into this world and I want more of these characters and the world they're in.
I enjoyed the narration, the pacing and phrasing carried the emotions of the story and the character voices were believable.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and/or narrator and/or publisher and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.
