if your middle school English teacher wrote a horror novel with the class,

This novel would be it. It's not bad, but it's not good. The writing is stilted and 'dumbed down.' The lead is a shit ass of a man, but his token attempts at being a good husband /father just illustrate how shitty he actually is--and of course it's all leading up to a super-emotional denoument that's supposed to heartrending, but it'll be more of a relief that the idiot is finally done fucking up his family's lives. The character is supposed to be John Wick-ian, or like the dude Better Call Saul plays in that movie where he's a hitman with a family --but he's...not. The author's attempts at writing teenaged girls and adult women in just bad. It reads like the book was written by a guy who doesn't really read a lot, or if he does, he only reads books with super heroic everyman main characters.

Are You Ready to Enter the Devil's Nest?

Everyone has some skeletons in their closet so to speak and keeps things to themselves from their significant others. However, working with shady crime/mob bosses which put your entire family's lives at risk shouldn't be one of those. As you can imagine the story starts frantically trying to ensure safety for everyone, which leads into old campgrounds that are not the most hospitable. This book is non-stop action from the moment you start wondering what will happen with the choices made by family, the history on the old campgrounds from cult backgrounds, etc. it's a frightening read.

Narrator does an amazing job bringing each character to life. Can't wait to see what the author does next.

Great Summer Read!

Great spooky read with some twists I wasn’t expecting. I thought it was a cool take on an abandoned campsite. Definitely something I would take as a vacation read. It’s short but keeps your attention. I was provided a copy of the audiobook for my unbiased review. Thank you to John Durgin for the copy. I’ll definitely be picking up your other book, The Cursed Among Us, when I’m able :)

The Devil's Nest

Anthony Graham is a real estate agent in NYC. He has made a deal with a not so scrupulous man (think MAFIA), but has done it for his family. When he stumbles upon a dead body at one of his properties, he realizes that his life (and that of his family) is now in danger. He decides to hide out at a campground he purchased and hasn't been able to sell. With the locals calling it "The Devil's Nest", it's no wonder!

This book is part "Goodfellows", part "The Shining" and part cultish horror. In fact, much of the book reminded me a lot of "The Shining", which I recently reread. (IMO, that's not a bad thing, but instead a tribute to SK's great book).

If you enjoy a tension filled book with just the right amount of gore, a truly horrific villain and characters that seem to keep making stupid mistakes, give this one a try. Just don't expect a HEA ending! This is my second book by the author, but it definitely won't be the last. Great storytelling and great characters, along with a supernatural element, make this a great read.

As usual, the narrator, Joe Hempel, has done a fantastic job with his performance. His pacing is perfect and really added a lot to the book. I was given the chance to listen to this audiobook by the author/publisher/narrator and chose to review it.

Pulls you in

It was an ok story. Tho some early parts were a bit longer than necessary. After that it picks up and keeps you interested. Tho the very last ending words, like the last 2-3 sentences seemed a bit rushed. As tho he just wanted to try and tie it in all together at once to bring it to an end. But other than that I really enjoyed it and as always joe hemple did excellent job narrating. I’ve liked all his stories he has done. Can always tell the characters apart and he doesn’t make any sound obnoxious or whiny. That’s always a plus. One shrill annoying character can ruin an entire story. Overall I recommend the story to anyone who’s not sure, it is worth a credit.
