About this listen

Samantha Brinkman, an ambitious, hard-charging Los Angeles criminal defense attorney, is struggling to make a name for herself and to drag her fledgling practice into the big leagues. Sam lands a high-profile double-murder case in which one of the victims is a beloved TV star - and the defendant is a decorated veteran LAPD detective. It promises to be exactly the kind of media sensation that would establish her as a heavy hitter in the world of criminal law.

Though Sam has doubts about his innocence, she and her two associates (her closest childhood friend and a brilliant ex-con) take the case. Notorious for living by her own rules - and fearlessly breaking everyone else's - Samantha pulls out all the stops in her quest to uncover evidence that will clear the detective. But when a shocking secret at the core of the case shatters her personal world, Sam realizes that not only has her client been playing her, he might be one of the most dangerous sociopaths she's ever encountered.

There’s a scene where a witness gets stoned on pot with the lawyer’s detective during questioning. All speech slowed to a crawl with slurred words. The lawyer who didn’t smoke spoke that way. Even narration like “She unlocked the car” slowed to a crawl with slurred speech. Neither the narrator nor the producer knew how to act. Even saying the next chapter number sounded drunk on liquor. And then she starts the next chapter in that type of speech. Incredibly stupid and so obnoxious that I couldn’t take it any more. I quit. The story was ok though. If I see it in a cheap ebook I’ll finish it.

Stopped because of narrator

Great story. It kept me in the edge of my seat. Who knew Marcia Clark had such a way with action. Travis Gilbert was awesome and so entertaining.

What did you love best about Blood Defense?

This book kept me thinking. I was totally engaged.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Sam, Alex and Michelle. They make a great team. The story line is believable and dangerous with a bit of suspense thrown in.

Have you listened to any of Tavia Gilbert’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, this is the first.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Sam and Dale were able to embrace without hesitation.

Great!

This was an okay listen but not spellbinding. It started strong and then wandered along to such an extent I had to work to stay with it until the end. Narration was okay but not great.

Just okay

This is the type of book I would choose to listen to on a long driving trip or an airplane trip. The plot moves along at a fast clip and there are some plot twists. It held my interest, but I doubt I would want to listen to it a second time.

Tavia Gilbert's narration is good.

Entertaining But Predictable

This was the best performance of a book I've heard in a long time. Very engaging and even the men's voices she made realistic. You could visualize the characters. Great story too - did NOT expect that ending!

Great narration!
