About this listen

This action-heavy epic-fantasy series opener is like a sword-and-sorcery Spartacus set in a richly imagined world.

It starts with a shipwreck following a magical storm at sea. Horace, a soldier from the West, had joined the Great Crusade against the heathens of Akeshia after the deaths of his wife and son from plague. When he washes ashore, he finds himself at the mercy of the very people he was sent to kill, who speak a language and have a culture and customs he doesn't even begin to understand.

Not long after, Horace is pressed into service as a house slave. But this doesn't last. The Akeshians discover that Horace was a latent sorcerer, and he is catapulted from the chains of a slave to the halls of power in the queen's court. Together with Jirom, an ex-mercenary and gladiator, and Alyra, a spy in the court, he will seek a path to free himself and the empire's caste of slaves from a system where every man and woman must pay the price of blood or iron. Before the end, Horace will have paid dearly in both.

Performed by Terence Aselford, Thomas Keegan, Nora Achrati, Colleen Delany, Thomas Penny, Ken Jackson, Christopher Scheeren, Andy Clemence, Tim Getman, Bradley Smith, Christopher Walker, Michael John Casey, David Jourdan, James Lewis, John Dow, Richard Rohan, Scott McCormick, Jeff Allin, Kimberly Gilbert, Alyssa Wilmoth, Steve Wannall, David Coyne, Nanette Savard, Scott Graham, James Konicek, Drew Kopas, Dylan Lynch, Rose Elizabeth Supan, Mort Shelby.

Overacting or storyline I dunno

It’s like they are trying really hard to use audio to help you visualize the book. I think they tried way too hard or the story speaks in circles. It’s the b audio version of a movie.

Boring story

I was just 2 hours to the end of this book, and decide to stop listening. As much as I enjoy Graphic Audio experience, this story is just too slow developed. without the map and glossary it's hard to understand where the events take place and what is really going on. The fact that there is a Male to Male attraction is happening between one of the main characters- I don't want to know how it will progress at all. I don't think the author had any passion creating this story. I am dropping it. I was hopping there is a potential. Very disappointing.
