About this listen

Coel ap Math and Snorri Yaroslav serve on the Frontier with Debts of Commission they can never hope to pay. When an enemy no one believes exists wipes out their detachment, the two warriors find themselves disgraced, destitute, and dishonorably discharged. They are soldiers without a cause, and must pay off their commissions or face a lifetime of indentured servitude or a rope.

When an Eastern sorcerer makes them an offer they cannot afford to refuse, they join a disparate band of associates. Each has their own tale of woe. Each has their own reasons for serving the sorcerer. The sorcerer has powerful enemies, and what started as a simple job as hired swords becomes an epic quest that takes them across the known world, and one that will determine the world's fate.

With enemies ringing the horizon behind and unimaginable peril ahead, their only refuge is honor, and the only path left to take is the Heroes Road.

11/10 - simply fantastic in all categories

Listening to this audiobook made me question some of my other audiobook ratings. Not because they have issues, but because this one simply blows almost all of them away. That’s probably partially due to the graphic audio (a movie…IN YOUR MIND). Haha, this was my first graphic audio experience and it was amazing! At first I thought it to be distracting, but quickly was immersed into the experience and it took off with a fun exciting story and many very interesting characters. To me, this is a standout. If you love action, fantasy, and adventure then this is the one for you!

A wonderful trip into a fantastic world

The blend of our medieval past with myth and legend takes you back to a world both fascinating as well as exciting. Hearing this as a graphic novel took to a place that was so gripping as not let me go. I from the first minutes of listening until the regretful last go not stop being drawn in. My regret came as I watched the minute counter run down knowing my journey with Cole was coming to an end. I was completely drawn in and had to constantly pull myself away to go back to my normal life. This was a fantastic story that was well told and in a fashion that truly brought into the world along side them experiencing their hardships. I think at one one point I began angry for the hardships inflicted on Cole and saddened at the loss when his companions fell one by one. This story very clever in its design giving us places we can easily imagine as they are a part of our real past leaving so much more time flushing out the characters and the story creating an excitingly rich and rewarding journey!

Fantastically performed; great story

I love this and want the second volume so badly. It's performed possibly the best of any audiobook / audio drama I've ever listened to, with each voice actor absolutely nailing it and appropriate sound effects at the right moments; the story is exciting — never a dull moment, never found a spot I wanted to stop listening to it; and the characters are fun and interesting. The setting is absolutely fascinating and unique, as well, with mysteries and dark magic and historical peoples and lands galore. It can be dark and bloody — but has also made me laugh more than most comedies.

A medieval adventure that spans the globe, in a world very like our own... except with sorcery and monsters and dwarves, every now and then. Fantastic.

My only complaint is that sometimes, Coel is absolutely useless. He's a strong and competent, if flawed, hero — until suddenly he starts deciding to stagger around stupidly and block rocks with his face. But this is a minor thing, and happens only rarely; and who knows, maybe it's realistic.

In the end, I rate it 11/10, and I wish I had more like it more than I've ever wished for any other audiobook.

Incredible

This has completely changed audiobooks for me. If I could add another 27 stars it wouldn’t be quite enough.

Amazing Historical Fantasy

I loved the characters, the world in which they live, the classic fantasy vibe mixed with harsh reality, and the sprinkles of erotic passion here and there. I stumbled onto these tales and I'm so glad I did!

Very Entertaining

A fantastic mixture of “history” and mythic lore in an epic fantasy tale, lots of fun!
