About this listen

For 12-year-old Emily, the best thing about moving to San Francisco is that it's the home city of her literary idol: Garrison Griswold, book publisher and creator of the online sensation Book Scavenger (a game where books are hidden in cities all over the country and clues to find them are revealed through puzzles). Upon her arrival, however, Emily learns that Griswold has been attacked and is now in a coma, and no one knows anything about the epic new game he had been poised to launch. Then Emily and her new friend, James, discover an odd book, which they come to believe is from Griswold himself and might contain the only copy of his mysterious new game. Racing against time, Emily and James rush from clue to clue, desperate to figure out the secret at the heart of Griswold's new game - before those who attacked Griswold come after them, too.

Cute but it was more like a youth book than a young adult

Cute story and well narrated but not as sophisticated as Harry Potter or hunger games.

Book Scavengers Rock!

What an interesting premise; I wish Book Scavenger, the game, was real! The mystery and the story line held my attention and the characters were quite likable. Plus, I learned a lot about ciphers and Poe; who knew there were so many cipher varieties? I love puzzles and books, so the theme was right up my alley. I will definitely read more in this series.

My 9-year-old loved; My 17-year-old poked holes in it. I found it easy to do both.

There is something here for everyone. I specifically bought this title with our upcoming family road trip in mind when it was featured as a "Daily Deal" a little while ago. This was a fun and engaging mystery for the whole family. There were some predictable moments and some that caught us by surprise. Along the way, the main character, Emily, definitely reasons consistent with her youth, and subsequently learns about loyalty and integrity in friendship, how to handle differences, and the value of community roots. As the peril increased near the end, I did wish that the kids would confide in the adults more, as the adults (mostly) behaved adult-like, but they still managed to learn from observation of various adult interactions and story-telling. The author's note after the conclusion was particularly interesting, as she breaks down what elements of this story are based on history.

A fun story

As an adult, I spend most of my listening hours consuming "serious stuff" - lectures on a variety of topics, non-fiction books on similar topics, and even the occasional "grown-up novel." But every now and again a book crosses my path that falls outside my normal genres, and this was one of those titles.

It's a kids book, to be sure, but it's a well written and well read one that can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike. If you're looking for a fun leisure listen, you've come to the right place.

Now, back to that lecture series on the History of Eastern Europe I was listening to earlier today...

Puzzling Fun for Everyone

I don't often read or listen to children's books but the synopsis grabbed my attention and I'm glad I took a chance on this one!
Book Scavenger is a fun, learning experience for all ages. The games, the relationships and the adventures are relevant to all of us. I especially like that the story, while easy enough for a younger reader was also interesting for an older reader!

Good YA book for book lovers

This is a fun book. Good for YA audiences. A mystery based on cryptic clues hidden in books. If you liked the Westing Game, you might like this one. Narrator was good.
