About this listen

In this atmospheric Southern cozy debut, Madeline Brimley returns to the bookstore she inherited, discovering that small towns hold deadly secrets.

Madeline Brimley left small-town Georgia many years ago to go to college and pursue her dreams on the stage. Her dramatic escapades are many, but success has eluded her, leaving her at loose ends. But then she gets word that not only has her beloved, eccentric Aunt Rose passed, but she's left Madeline her equally eccentric bookstore housed in an old Victorian mansion in the small college town of Enigma. But when she arrives in her beat-up Fiat to claim The Old Juniper Bookstore—and restart her life—Madeline is faced with unexpected challenges. The gazebo in the backyard is set ablaze, and a late-night caller threatens to burn the whole store down if she doesn't leave immediately.

But Madeline Brimley, not one to be intimidated, ignores the threats and soldiers on. Until there's another fire and a murder in the store itself. Now, with a cloud of suspicion falling over her, it's up to Madeline to untangle the skein of secrets and find the killer before she herself is the next victim.

What’s better than a Bookstore but a murder and Bookstore. Just when you think that you figured out who’s done it. A new person comes to play. Send a new person. Then a new person. You don’t really get it until the very last minute. Definitely a five star.

Coming from a small town gossip is key

it is very clean..no language or adult content. Not too graphic and easy to read.

just a nicelittle mystery

I don’t think I’ve ever read or listened to a book where the protagonist did so many stupid things and made so many stupid, inappropriate comments. She undervalued the intelligence of several people from southern Georgia. The narrator mangled the pronunciation of the word deleterious. Someone should have caught that.

The protagonist

I cannot wait for #2. Love the characters, humor and story as a whole. The Audio book was performed well.

Booked for Murder is a well written cozy mystery with engaging characters and a fully developed plot. There are several twists and turns and the characters were believable with realistic interactions. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to the next one.

The narrator nailed the many characters and the author kept me waiting and wanting. Wonder when the next in series will be out!

I really enjoyed this story. The characters are well written, the story is interesting and grabs your attention right away, and the narrator did a good job with the story. Overall, an interesting and great book!

Good story

I liked the story. But I found the protagonist to be petulant & irritating. I found myself often saying 'oh shut up and slow down you brat'.
Meanwhile, and less germaine to this story, but the Baptist Reverend Gloria was a far more likeable & an interesting seconday character. I would enjoy a story/series centering around her - a sort of southern, modern, quirky Father Brown.

Good Story But

Protagonist ignores three threatening phone calls, has someone to stay who gets killed, and has no guilt for stupid decisions.

Beyond Illogical

The narrator does well, and I can see where others might really like this book. Despite enjoying the beginning, listening to this became hard to get through for me. The main character was sarcastic throughout, condescending to her small-town neighbors, and just not that nice. Every other character was given a very strong accent that made them all sound alike, and it became distracting and tiresome. The story also could have been shortened considerably. As another reviewer mentioned, it went on and on. There's not much focus on the books or the bookshop, so don't choose this one if that's what you have in mind. If you like a very, very small town setting combined with sarcastic/acerbic dialog this might be worth a try.

Didn't Love this One
