About this listen

Who ever thought that life after an apocalyptic event would be easy?

Charley is under pressure. The demands of her new community are piling on stress after stress, and even with her developing magical skills, she's finding it hard to cope. Things aren't any better for Monroe - his grief and guilt over what happened to his werewolf pack are overwhelming him. When dead bodies start to appear across the city, they're going to have to work together to prevent more killings. But whether they'll be able to survive together, too, is anyone's guess.

I think I enjoyed this book more than the first in the series because it had a more straightforward plot and less random chaos.

totally loving this series. I LOVE LOVE the fact that the Magic City is Manchester!!! I live in the USA now & have done 4 of half my life but the BEST times of my life & the happiest memories I have are of my childhood then of from 17-20 when I was having the time of my life (usually bc I was at one of the bars in castlefield like Barça or having a drink at the Living Room on Deansgate! My point is that it's lovely to hear Ruth's voice as a mancunian' I actually saw that someone had left a review saying that her mancunian accent was too hard to understand! lol i literally laughed out loud thinking i bet shes glad though that Ms. Harper didnt choose a narrator from Rambsbottom lmao!!! EVERYONE PLEASE IGNORE THAT COMMENT IN THAT REVIEW BC THIS SERIES IS SO BRILLANT THAT IF YOU DO NOT LISTEN TO IT THEN YOU WILL SEVERLY LOOSE OUT!!!! This series has honestly been a breath of fresh air for me. I love listening to audiobooks/series in the Fantasy/Supernatural/Romance genre(s). I LOVE Mary Janice Davidsons Undead series and the likes. However I've been so disheartened recently bc all the series are the same and to me it's like I just wish they'd all stop with the whole describing graphically every other chapter the MMC & MFC's sex life blow by blow in every single book in the series!! It totally ruins it all for me and a few friends have said the same. It's like the real main storyline is how they got each other off & the real storyline is maybe only 30% of the audiobook!! -and that's putting it mildly AND generously. I was THRILLED to find this series -listen I don't mind one or two love scenes in an audiobook- but I have found as of late I ca t find an audiobook series where basically porn scenes aren't sprinkled in thru out! Even worse is when I had just started a new one and an hour in my own mother comes to sit by me on the sofa just as basically the audiobook I've been listening to has just switched from a seemingly great start to a book to a lengthy graphic description of the MMC & MFG's s3x life! This series is AMAZING AND I CANT PRAISE Helen Harper's brilliant imagination enough! thank you so much for sharing your Magical Manchester with us! I cannot wait to listen to the last/next one I'm almost giddy! as soon as I hit' 'submit," on this review I shall be pressing play on the next book!!
Seriously this is the best audiobook series I have listened to in a very LONG time. and usually I listen to about 5 a week!!!
i cannit wait to listen to Helen Harpers other series too! Ah thrilled that the narrator is one of my faves-that is another bonus for me!

Listen to this series bc if you don't then you really will loose out! okay on to the next one for me !!! #MonroeLurvesCharley4eva

I mostly enjoyed the first book because it was fairly creative, although lacking in important details to really anchor this universe.

For instance what was the ball about? It changed Charlie fundamentally, but we never were told what it was, or how it being swallowed by a character (who totally disappears) does what it does.

As the city begins to settle into its new reality, this has turned into a detective story. Unfortunately, it feels it fairly pedestrian and feels somehow, blocky? As apposed to naturally flowing. Like, why were we told the back story of Charlie’s youth?

At the same time, there is no foreshadowing to keep readers engaged, nor have we been introduced to all of the players within the first 1/4 of the story. Nor do we understand Monroe’s sudden personality change around Charlie, although his personal issues make more sense.

Anyway, the way it’s written, this story kind of just feels like we’re blindly going around corners and chasing our tails.
I felt the same with the first book as well, and when Max was taken care of I honestly expected the story to continue as the story didn’t naturally progress to that ending. The plot went from understanding this new world, then does a 180° to a kidnapping and ensuing heist within the last portion.

I’m not sure I can finish this book, I may come back to it when I’m looking for more new material.

I REALLY enjoy the Waifs & Strays series, so I was confused by this one.

As usual, Ruth does an amazing performance.

At its heart this book is an amateur sleuth story
