About this listen

From Million-Selling Author Robert J. Crane...

A demon hunter without a home. A cop without a cause. A seemingly unstoppable evil rising in a small town...

WARNING: Contains violence, coarse language and sexual situations.

***THIS 8-BOOK SERIES IS NOW COMPLETE***

Archibald "Arch" Stan was a local cop in Midian, Tennessee that was good at his job, good at being a husband, and exceptionally good at hiding his disappointment at not being able to figure out what was missing in his life that made it all seem so empty. Lafayette Hendricks looked like a drifter, a broken-down hitchhiker blown through Midian on the prevailing winds. When Arch catches him in a fight on the town square, though, things start to get weird, fast, because the guy he's fighting doesn't die when he gets shot. And Hendricks is carrying a sword.

Pretty soon, Arch's whole life is turned upside down by Hendricks's revelation that there's a secret world operating under the one he's been living in his whole life - one filled with demons, chaos, and unspeakable evils, one of which is already in town, stirring trouble. And if the two men don't band together to keep watch on the darkness falling on Midian, then this small town might just get swallowed up by the forces of evil - with the rest of the world to follow shortly behind.

Good read

The first chapter of this book is an introduction to 3 different characters. While I enjoyed the book itself, computer narration just ran all the paragraphs together so you couldn't tell you had switched to a different character. It just made things very confusing. There was also no fluctuation in accent when the book specified heavy accents, and the colorful colloquialisms used didn't sound right with the flat narration. The narration lacked the emotional fluctuation that draws a person into the story.

This story is really scary in the beginning. But it was very interesting and held my attention. I honestly credit virtual voice for that. The reading was so smooth & soothing to my ears that, although it was creepy or scary, it also relaxed me mentally.

Virtual Voice Naration was Excellent

Okay story but the robot voice was terrible. It was flat and continuous and made it hard to follow the story.

The robot voice was a huge distraction.

I wish the AI would pause more between character switches as I'm sure the book skips a few lines or has a visual separation of thoughts. But, the book was great and I'm definitely going to listen to the whole series.

great book love the story but AI reading needs work

I really enjoyed the story but the virtual voice is not good. I would love to listen to the other books in the series but won't.

Great storyline Bad virtual voice

The AI is not something that I like. First time listening to one. Probably will be the last. Difficult to follow when the author moved to different characters perspective. The delivery of “oh” is also an issue.

The AI narrator.

I am sorry, but I really tried to listen to the book, but I just can't with the AI voice. The lack of inflection, the practically same voice for all characters, and the running of paragraph and change of events into another was hard to follow...at least for me. It felt like one giant run on sentence. It's a shame, because I liked the storyline based on what I could gather, so this is no reflection on the author or his writing. l will probably just buy the books and read them. Thanks.

Unfortunately, can't stand the AI narration!

I enjoyed the story. The AI would have been better if it understood pausing between scene changes. Without a pause you are suddenly following a different character in a different place. I've had to back up to see when it changed.

As long as they are using an AI, why not have it do different voices for each character to help us tell them apart? That is part of what makes the human read stories better.

An entertaining story with some unexpected humor

I like the story Robert Crane tells. It has a great story line, and the characters are interesting.

However, the AI narrator is REALLY BAD! No inflection, no change in tone or pitch, which makes it difficult to follow when there are multiple people talking (which is most of the time). Often, there's no pause when switching scenes, which is an intricale
intricel part at one point.

Again... I liked the story, but the AI narrator ruins it. Read the book.

Horrible AI Narrator
