Publisher's summary

The past and the present collide in the final installment of USA Today bestselling author Debra Webb’s Devlin & Falco series, threatening everything these two detectives care about.

Birmingham detectives Kerri Devlin and Luke Falco arrive at the scene of a double homicide to discover that nothing makes sense. A woman and her child are dead, and though the husband says he killed them, the evidence says otherwise. Why would a man confess to unspeakable murders he didn’t commit?

What starts as an open-and-shut case explodes into a web of new leads. Devlin and Falco get to work tracking down every single one - including a disturbing connection between the murders and Falco’s dark past.

Falco knows the incident from eight years ago will jeopardize the partnership he’s built with Devlin, both on and off the job. If he could go back, he would - but what happened happened, and there’s a murderer on the loose. Devlin and Falco must slog through the pain to get to the truth; and so far the only truth they know is that everyone is lying.

Very good story; not so good narration

There were lots of twists and turns in the story and I was surprised at the end. I started to return the book after the first chapter but hung in and am glad I did. My problem with this book is the narration. Oddly, I thought the female narrator was really annoying when voicing Devlin but was ok when voicing Falco and the mothers. I ended up getting used to the voice so it didn't ruin the book but I think someone else would have been better.

Appreciated the Addition of the Male Narrator

This was a good book. It kept me fully engaged trying to keep track of everything that was going on as well as trying to figure out how all of the parts tied together. There were some things that occurred that were obvious, like the people that were really the bad guys. Some things I suspected, and others I just couldn't put my finger on how that information was relevant to the overall picture.

I listened to the audiobook and appreciated the addition of the male narrator. I think it added a something extra to the book.

At times, the plot felt like it was meandering, but it came together, and I liked the twist at the end. There were hints given that things were moving in that direction, but I thought it played out nicely. I am kicking up my rating to 4.5 stars because I like the addition of the narrator. It made Falco be more Falco, lol.

A great story with twists turns, surprises and romance

Enjoyed learning more about the main characters as they closed a difficult case, and became a family. The honesty, understanding and support they had for each other made the story for me.

Good Series Ending

4 Stars for me!

My rating range of this story... 3.5 - 4.25 Stars
If significant, why?

Main Character Ratings...
H = 7/10
h = 8/10

Narrator Rating(s)
M = n/a
F = 6/10
If below 5/10, why?

Was cheating involved? Not by the MCs
Any major triggers to be aware of? Child death, rape (lightly discussed)

If Comedy... Type? n/a
Genuinely Funny
Cringe Inducing
Just No!

Angst Level? Heavy
Light, Moderate, Heavy or Please Stop
3 Stars for me!

Internal Monolog? Please Stop
Light, Moderate, Heavy or Please Stop

Scenes with heat... No

The back story... The blurb says it all!

Final Notes... The series finally started off quickly but the 25% - 60% moved a bit too slow for me. The last 40% was fairly strong and well played out with multiple ending sequences. The ending was definitely OTT with the bad guy(s) being crazy bad. As OTT as it was, I did enjoy how everything ended and was happy to see better endings for several of the characters in the series.

HEA or HFN? HEA

Excellent as usual but ditch male narrator

Very well written & developed story, but the male narrator insertions were disruptive. His voice grated on me.

Quite the Story

I liked how the writer presented clues and had the readers guessing what exactly happened. As the story unfolded, what was disclosed helped the detectives to unwind the tangled web. What a web indeed! Great book!

Who did it?

Very good book with lots of twist. There were so many times I thought I knew who did it and how and in the end, I was completely wrong.
Worth the credit.
