About this listen

A haunting and heartfelt supernatural thriller, The Caretaker invites you into a world where memory, mystery, and the unseen collide. Featuring an extraordinary cast—Erick Avari, Kelly Clarkson, Henry Ian Cusick, Charles Esten, Brandon Engman, Amy Grant, Hayley Orrantia, Michael Shanks, and Josh Robert Thompson—this fully immersive audiobook blends original music by Joseph Trapanese with rich sound design and cinematic foley to elevate every chilling twist and tender moment. Written by R.J. Halbert, The Caretaker is more than a story—it’s an experience.

A family desperate for a fresh start finds themselves tangled up in a strange connection to a mysterious old house.

After experiencing marriage troubles and dark pasts, Ian and Lyana Keane are ready to leave Boston behind and move with their two kids—Ariel (15) and Zach (12)—to the sleepy New Hampshire town of Littleton. They are inexplicably drawn to an old house that they all feel an immediate connection to—a home complete with a rich history, extensive grounds, intriguing character, and a Caretaker. But as time goes on, strange things begin to happen with the house and the family living within its walls. They see recurring symbols, experience realistic hallucinations, uncover mysteries they can’t explain. One by one the Keane family realise that dark forces—or something stronger—are afoot. Be it cursed ancient mythology, dark magic, or just chilling coincidence, the Keane family are forced to rely on Marshall the caretaker for help, but is he really as kind and cooperative as he seems?

One thing is clear: the Keane family is more connected to this house than they could have ever anticipated.

But will it have the power to save their family from tragedy? Or will it tear them apart for good?

I just finished reading Caretaker a Mystery, Thriller & Suspense book written by R.J. Halbert. I read the AudioBook published by Novus Press Works . I borrowed this book on Audible Unlimited. I listened to this book on Audible. It is Book One of a series.

This book is a must read if you like: Historical mysteries, family coming together, and feel good stories.

The book starts with a description of a young boy in an ancient temple under attack. Then we flash forward to the Keane family settling into a new home. We get to know each family member and their individual struggles as they get to know the house in some strange ways.

This book has a cozy thriller vibe. I'm not sure how else to describe it. You get to know the day to day of the family, then the thriller seeps in.

I really really enjoyed the book. However, I felt like there was too much left to be resolved in book two.

I loved the representation in this book. Skip the rest of this if you don’t want a spoiler but it needs to be said. As someone who has had loved ones affected by Lewy body dementia I very much appreciate the terrifying but realistic representation of this disease.

I mostly just loved the character building in this story.

I wanted more connections made with the mysitcal/historical parts of the book before the end of the book. When the book ended, I almost felt cheated. I know the author intends to resolve things over the series, but the beginning was so rich and well set up that the ending felt anticlimactic in that regard. I don't think I'd have the same complaint if I was able to binge the series all at once.

I usually don’t like full cast narrations but this one was fabulous! You really can't beat this star studded cast of amazing voices. Kelly Clarkson, Amy Grant, and Henry Ian Cusick were phenomenal.

I wish I had the chance to read this series all at once. The book was so good, but did leave so many things to link to the next book that I wish I could read it now.

Content Warnings: Life threatening illness, detailed descriptions of Lewy body dementia.

The Keane family is starting over...but is this the house of their dreams or a nightmare?

I've been listening to audiobooks for years because, like so many people, I love a good story but rarely have time to sit down with a physical book. Over time, I’ve learned to temper my expectations—many audiobooks are delivered in a flat, monotone style, often with one narrator barely shifting their voice between characters. Audio quality matters to me, and it’s rare to find a production that truly feels alive.

Enter Caretaker.

Within minutes, I knew this wasn’t just another audiobook—this was the immersive, cinematic audio experience I had always hoped audiobooks could be. The narration by Henry is excellent, the character performances are vivid and engaging (special shoutout to Erick’s portrayal of Marshall). On top of that, the foley effects and Joe Trapaneze’s incredible score add a level of depth and atmosphere that made this one of the most compelling audiobook experiences I’ve ever had.

It’s clear that a tremendous amount of care, creativity, and effort went into this production. I genuinely can’t wait for the next two installments. If you're looking for a story that’s as well-produced as it is well-told, Caretaker should be at the top of your list.

This is what audiobooks should be

Where does this series go from here here? It will be fascinating to read/listen to the next book in the series as there are so many directions the plot could take.

Intriguing!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and there were only a couple of things that bugged me, but they weren't enough to make me stop! The narrator, Henry Ian Cusick, was fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to his voice. I'm so glad to see Michael Shanks doing voice work because I absolutely adored him in the Stargate series, though I haven't followed him since that time and I'm quite sure he's been busy in the acting world. I wasn't a huge fan of the mother's voice in this book, but that's neither here nor there. I was left wanting more and to see how everything will be tied together. The amount of time that must have been spent on getting historical information must have been insane! Kudos to R. J. Halbert!!!
