About this listen

For fans of Emily Henry and Abby Jimenez, The Anatomy of Us is the debut novel by Sunday Times bestseller and renowned midwife Leah Hazard, performed by Academy Award nominee Jessie Buckley.

It’s New Year’s Eve in Edinburgh’s biggest hospital, and Dr. Becca Armitage is struggling. After a devastating shift in the emergency room leaves her questioning everything, she signs herself off work and spirals into depression. Enter Dr. Andrew Maitland – charming, wealthy and, according to Becca, the Most Beautiful Man in the World. As they begin an unexpected romance, Becca finds herself lying to maintain the image of the put-together doctor Andrew thinks she is. But Andrew has secrets of his own. As their relationship deepens, past wounds and current truths threaten to derail their budding connection. Can two imperfect people find a way to be honest with each other, and themselves?

The Anatomy of Us is a moving story about medicine, self-acceptance, and the messy reality of falling in love. By turns hilarious and heart-breaking, it is an intimate exploration of what it means to be human in all our glorious imperfections.

I like the story line and the truth about depression. Sometimes you know it’s an issue until it hits you and you need to find what works for you. I love the he stuck it out with her until she was in a place to face her issues. Cute story

True about depression

As a person who has gone through depression, I can say that the writer definitely portray the feeling very well. The story is very good, but I do agree that an epilogue would have been nice. The narration was outstanding.

Great story

The story started off very funny with the FMC having lots self-deprecating humor as she describes herself and I was laughing out loud. She has a meet cute with “the most beautiful man in the world” as she refers to him throughout the book. Their relationship starts then things start going dark when she continually lies to Andrew, including covering up the fact that she’s taken a leave of absence from the hospital where they both work as she’s fallen into a deep depression and won’t get out of bed or bathe for weeks on end. She’s not sure she can even be an ER doctor anymore. It gets darker when she decides to gradually ghost him instead of being honest or just cutting things off. She knows she’s being cruel but does it anyway. By this point, there’s certainly no humor and I’m not sure I like the character or have any sympathy for her. She continues her self-sabotage behavior. She’s very depressed, not sure if she can be a doctor anymore, and briefly discusses suicide. If these are triggers, do not listen! At this point, I’m hoping that Andrew moves on and finds someone else as he deserves better. I thought the narrator does an excellent job although I had a bit of difficulty understanding her when she voiced a Scottish brogue for Andrew’s dad. The book finally has a resolution and HEA (maybe?) but leaves it until the last few minutes when they confess their lies and truths to each other. No epilogue so I guess the listener is left to decide what their future is.

Very dark but real story

While the narration was good, the story was exhausting. I will read just about everything and this does qualify as that. It just ended so abruptly it left me a bit peeved. The body was a slog and for it to just end while things might be looking up for the characters was disappointing. It’s like the author just got tired.

Not particularly good

I thought this was depressing. Certain parts were funny. Narration was good and the story line did not have huge gaps.

This is a nice book for looking into the lives of a doctor’s world. They are sometimes put on a pedestal giving the idea to the general public that they live the perfect privileged lives. This book shows they are just like all the test of us,.. ordinary people with flaws. Interesting read. Narrator is also very good!

Funny, sweet, a little sad at times but oh so relatable. Loved all the characters especially the hilarious roommate that is one of those friends that always has your back. The main characters were refreshingly honest even if it took a bit to get there. Good bye daddy issues! LOL IYKYK

Awesome characters. I loved the roommate.
