About this listen

Everyone has a past, but for most it isn't so far in the past as Seth Sangre. His past is literally from thousands of years ago. Seth's past led him to the present seeking something that might help him save his country from destruction. He has been in the present for over three years now, and he just found exactly what he has been looking for. Mari had dreams of college being a fresh start, one where she would start over and not fall for the good looking player like high school. Unfortunately for her, that's exactly what ends up falling into her lap on the first day she moves into the dorms. Now she has to hold to her promise to herself not fall for the handsome Seth Sangre. But he doesn't plan to make it easy for her. Seth has already marked her as his next conquest.

As the semester progresses, Mari learns that Seth might just have a past of his own that's literally in the past. Suddenly, Mari finds her future along with her past put into question. She's connected to Seth far more than she ever wanted to be, and maybe he isn't the player who she thought he was. If Mari can trust her heart enough to follow him, Seth will lead Mari on an adventure of a lifetime-and reveal family secrets she never knew existed.

Not the story I was expecting, a pleasant surprise

This book is a 5 plus for both the author and narrator! The book wove a story of Mari an ordinary girl who longed for some spark of adventure in her life. Off to college she goes and finds the wildest adventure and possibly love that she could imagine. Mari is a funny, full of wit gal that was easy to like. Mari becomes good friends with Seth and his brothers Ty & Dee. As their adventure moves from the college campus, we learn how complex the guys really are.

While I tried to guess at the outcome of story, sure that I was right based on typical writing, I was *wrong*. The story with it’s twists surprised me in several spots. Carnelian did end on a good note. It left me wanting to know more and to solve more of Mari & Seth’s background. I hope to read in the next books more about Ty and Dee. The narrator was able to soothingly tell the story and draw me in to the point where I missed exit on the commute. I was totally in the driving zone listening to the story with no commuter stress. This was my first narration by Hollie Jackson.

Can't get past the emotionless delivery

The narrator's accent and lack of emotion made the story uninteresting and boring. I never felt that the connection between the characters was anything more than physical because of this blasé performance. The author spends quite a bit of time on the type of girl the FMC doesn't like (shallow and boy hungry in essence) but the accent and tone of voice of the narrator sound exactly like that type of girl. I may read this book in the future to see if divorcing it from the performance makes me like it any better.

Loved loved loved!!!!

After reading the Legend of the Blue eyes trilogy I was a little weary of how a completely different series would be but this like her (Kristin McMichael) first series, it hooked me in from the very beginning! Absolutely enthralled by it & can't wait to read the next in the series!

Great YA Fantasy/Time Travel/Romance story!

18-year-old Mari is off to college, and on her own for the first time of her life. Little does Mari know how drastic her life changes on this unexpected adventure of romance, friendship, and (holy hell) time travel!

Carnelian is the first book in this new YA Fantasy/Romance/Time Travel epic adventure! Here we are introduced to Mari, the center of all the mayhem that ensues. Mari grew up with her mother and grandfather, never knowing who her father was. Traveling around the world with her mother and grandfather, who are antique dealers, Mari never wanted for anything, until she met Seth. In college Seth was the Edward Cullen. Every girl wanted him, and he knew it, but he only had eyes for Mari. They both had this undeniable pull towards each other, but Mari was the only one that didn't know why. Seth and his brothers, Ty and Dee, had a big matzah ball of a secret, and Mari was one determined girl to find out what it was!

The story was very well written, with much detail to the world building, and character development. I really enjoyed the slow cook method of revealing important plot information, so as to not get everything up front, and then have no surprises, or have anything to keep you glued to the story. The plot twist, well the first one, caught me off guard, and left me wondering how things would turn out now, then BOOM! I was thrust into a whole other scenario that opened up an action scene, that I didn't know it needed until it was there. As Mari was learning more about Seth's past, or current life, she uncovers some of her own family secrets. When my emotions were peaked at their height, and with my anticipation of the next move, it was the end! Are you kidding me! But wait...the first chapter to the next book is included, score!

So needless to say, I loved this book! Can PY love a YA Fantasy/Romance/Time Travel book with NO SEX in it, the answer is YES! Not ONE bump and grind scene at all! Can you believe it! Check it out for your self, you won't regret it. Until next time...

Narrator Review

Hollie Jackson is the narrator for this book. This is my first time experiencing Hollie as a narrator. Hollie has a nice smooth tone to her voice. She's very age appropriate for reading as Mari as well. The recording quality was excellent, and the flow from chapter to chapter seamless. Her character voices were well done, not overly dramatic with the accents, but just right. I do appreciate a good narrator, and Hollie is on my A list for such. Great job Hollie! 4 Star Rating.

romance with a twist

I couldn't put it "down." I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I honestly only got it because it was recommended to me and the cover was appealing, and nothing else peaked my interest. This book was engaging, and a breath of fresh air in regards to the premise of the story. Worth the read in my opinion.
