About this listen

Charlie Munger, Berkshire Hathaway's visionary vice chairman and Warren Buffett's indispensable financial partner, has outperformed market indexes again and again, and he believes any investor can do the same. His notion of "elementary, worldly wisdom" - a set of interdisciplinary mental models involving economics, business, psychology, ethics, and management - allows him to keep his emotions out of his investments and avoid the common pitfalls of bad judgment.

Munger's system has steered his investments for 40 years and has guided generations of successful investors. This book presents the essential steps of Munger's investing strategy, condensed here for the first time from interviews, speeches, writings, and shareholder letters, and paired with commentary from fund managers, value investors, and business-case historians. Derived from Ben Graham's value-investing system, Munger's approach is straightforward enough that ordinary investors can apply it to their portfolios. This book is not simply about investing. It is about cultivating mental models for your whole life, but especially for your investments.

Too many quotations (or “how to write a book without writing”)

“Charlie Munger, <place>, <year>”

Congratulations, you’ve now experienced 15% of this book. Quotation after quotation, distinguished only by the monotonous attribution above, are used in place of actual written content by the author.

Best business book i have listened to!

What made the experience of listening to Charlie Munger the most enjoyable?

This is more than a business book as Charlie shares how he thinks and approaches tough business decisions which are also applicable to everyday life.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Charlie Munger?

Many memorable quotes like the "one legged man at a ass kicking contest" also his use of implementing many approaches (mental models) to his investment making decisions.

Have you listened to any of Fred Stella’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Fred Stella is a polished presenter and narrator.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Just a book with gold nuggets of wisdom and funny at times too.

Any additional comments?

We all hear of the genius of Warren Buffett but Charlie Munger is his absolute equal!

Actually quite informative

not much of a story and the action gets broken up by citation, but overall it's a fantastic glimpse into the buffet-munger strategy.

Lots of quotes

I think the book was pretty well organized, but it was basically a bunch of quotes strung together. I definitely got some insight into my own thinking.

Hard to listen too. Too many citations.

Get ready to hear the name "Charley munger" every 30 seconds. Horrible. Too many quote citations. Ruins the book.

Good story, difficult to follow at times.

What do I mean by good story but difficult to follow at times? There were too many times where the flow of the information was interrupted by the necessity to reference a quote of Charlie Munger's from a talk he gave years ago, or from something he wrote some time ago. I felt like I purchased a book of quotes rather than a book with an original story.

Overall, I did get value from this book and learned a lot more about value investing and the iconic Charlie Munger.

Decent book about investing

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Not for me I have most of the materials from other books about Warren Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway. The book does not bring much new insight about Muunger's own strategy except sporadically.
