Compelling

"Chasing the Signal" is a captivating short story that skillfully combines elements of family drama and interstellar adventure. The story immediately immerses readers in a suspenseful and fast-paced narrative, introducing a multi-generational family with complex dynamics and relationships, with Bellamy at its heart. As the story unfolds, Bellamy's character undergoes significant development, especially when faced with unexpected challenges.

While the author excels in creating a future world rich in technological marvels and the promise of extraterrestrial life, it's worth noting that some readers may have mixed feelings about the narration. However, despite any reservations about the narration, Mauldin manages to craft well-rounded characters and evocative writing that keeps readers engaged.

Fast paced and moving

Chasing the Signal packs a lot into a short space. Fast paced and with a moving family drama at its heart, we are introduced to three generation of one family, 10 year old Bellamy, her bitter and abusive mother Grace, and her grandfather who has takes them with him on an interstellar journet to chade an alien signal. Relationships are strained and Bellamy is forced to take charge when their ship comes under attack in deep space.

Really enjoyed the production and the story could have easily been expanded to a full length novel. I would recommend to those that like space adventure stories with strong human element. Full disclosure I was given a discounted copy of this story for fair and honest review.

Interesting Concept--too short!

Interesting concept, though short, but this would make a fun much longer piece. It starts as a tragedy, or well, goes into one. It is set with several flashbacks as we learn more about the characters, and the evil aliens who attacked. I enjoyed it, but I really think this could be stretched out to make a full novel, and a good one. I will be looking for more from this author.

In a word—solid.

I really enjoyed Chasing the Signal. Solid story. Solid writing. Solid performance.

Mauldin managed to accomplish quite a lot in a relatively short span of time. I found myself a little bit lost at the very beginning, listening to the first couple of minutes 2 or 3 times to get my bearings in this new world at which I had just newly arrived. The context of the world came quickly enough though.

In the end, Mauldin has crafted a relatable future world with really cool tech, baddies I want to know more about, and a lead character who I want to follow on more adventures.

Entertaining

This story is short. It was a bit confusing to me since it started with no understanding of what was going on or who the characters were. This was done by jumping the POV back and forth through time rather than a linear flow.

The character was trying to escape a situation that was beyond their understanding or control. They were dependent upon an unknown who sometimes helped and sometimes did not.

Being a short story one would not expect a complete world building but more would have helped.

The narration was well done.

This book was provided free of charge with the expectation of an honest review.

Deeply vivid imagery

J.D Ledford is a joy to listen to, very active and truly committed to the story. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to a narrator as lively as her performance.

The imagery in this story is ethereal, I don’t know if it was J.D. Ledford’s soothing tone as she played out Bellamy’s actions that really gave life to the words, but the writing is beautiful regardless.

Beautiful work

Dramatic SciFi short

This sci-fi short story was unlike any sci-fi I’ve seen yet. Imaginative technology mixed with family drama and a narrow escape. It was a fun listen. I want to see more in this universe, explore all the races, cultures, and technology!

A journey in the sea of stars

Received an audio review copy from the author, this is and honest review. Narrated beautifully by J.D. Ledford comes the story of Bellamy and an interwoven journey of what brought her and her family among the stars and the stark consequences that ended up for Bellamy landed upon a very alien ship. This ship from the Foundry that enables her to become one with the ship as Bellamy searches for her mother that seemingly survived the impossible. While a quick story,Chasing the Signal is masterfully poignant, tragic and realistic... a memorable ride.

Highly recommended.
