Publisher's summary

It has been six months since their father locked them in the security vault with a promise to return. But he never came back. With supplies running out and vital life support systems failing, Jack, Samantha, and Will have no choice but to ignore their father's warnings and leave the vault. With no knowledge of what befell the world outside or what they might expect once the door is opened, they find themselves in a world they do not recognize.

Thrust into the remains of the world they remember, how will they survive on their own, not knowing what or who else remains among the ruins?

Y.A. Verison of The Road

THIER SEARCH FOR FOOD WAS FRUITLESS
While this is not Cormac McCarthy, it is very well written. The interaction between the children is real. This was not some hack piece done by an amateur. What kept it from five stars for me was, how they drew the mystery out. We are in the dark on what happened to the earth for 95% of the book, and we are given very little to work with. Their is a chase part of the book involving a man on horse back, that they milked for way too long. This would normally keep me from getting the next book in the series, but all that was revealed in the last half hour really got me interested. I will get the next book, but if the art of drawing drama out continues, I will not get the third. That book is not available yet anyway.

THE ONLY THING IN JACK'S WAY WAS HIMSELF
I was a little lost on where this was taking place in the beginning. The narrator has a British Accent and so many of these books, these days take place in London, I was surprised to find out we were in Chicago. Since the kids where in a metal container and the first time they opened the door to the container, they were in the middle of a storm, I just assumed they were on ground level outside a home. Instead they were at the top of an apartment building. I like some mystery and surprising twists, but to be confused about where the story is taking place is not fun or helpful. While I have nothing against the narrator, she does a wonderful job, I wonder, with so many of these stories taking place in London, when we finally get a story that takes place in America, can't we get an American narrator?

Enjoyable action book that is easy read.<br />

I enjoyed this action fast paced first book or the series. If planning on reading plan on whole series as each leaves on cliffhanger making me want more of the story. About children who stayed in a bunker and then came out because their supplies were just about out. Their father whom put them in it was supposed to come back but didn't. Now trying to figure out if there was a war, or what they must try to figure out how to survive while seeking shelter, food, and searching for others. All the while running from whom or what?

I like the story line but the narrator...

the story line is great, unique. I enjoyed listening to something different when many 'how the world ends' novels are starting to sound alike. The one thing that drove me crazy was the narrator. This is set in the USA yet she has an accent. While she does ok with switching from boy to girl they sound much older then what their supposed to be. But the biggest problem for me was that instead of feeling like I was there, a part of the story, right in the middle of it, I felt like someone was reading me a bedtime novel. Which is weird seeing as this is a tense, thrilling, action story. I love when I feel like I'm listening to a movie, to people actually talking instead I was a bystander. It really took away from the storyline for me. Other then that, overall it's a good story.

Slowest book ever and very predictable.

This book was painful to finish. The climax of the book was akin to an ant hill.
