About this listen

For Logan Anderson, moving on from a traumatic past means moving back to his hometown of Castle Rock, Colorado, to start a personal-security business with his brothers. But it's not long before Logan runs into Grace Mason, his best friend from high school...and the woman who never answered his letters during his Army years.

Grace was pleasantly surprised to see Logan return to Castle Rock, despite their falling-out ten years ago. Everyone always assumed they would end up together, including Grace, who had eyes only for him. But as Logan eventually escaped their town, Grace got pulled further into her family's controlling grasp - and farther away from the man she loved.

Now, united by scars both visible and not, the two must fight to free Grace from the suffocating hold of her family. But the Masons won't let go easily - and they'll do whatever it takes to keep the couple apart.

Gets a 4 star just for being Stoker's book

Okay, I've read and enjoyed all of Susan Stoker's series, and applaud her willingness to try a different formula. A bit darker.

As another reviewer remarked, there are plenty of plot holes that should have been addressed during the final draft process. The believability that we as readers suspend to allow for "insta love" and legal matters to dissolve with a flick of a pen are normal. But some plot holes are just holes.

What the characters go through as children definitely impact their adulthood. That being said, it is really hard to like the female lead.

As for this narrator in the audio book, she reads well and keeps the listener engaged, but the attempt to do a male voice is just sad. Logan's brother's voices are particularly feminine and awkward.

This author never disappoints

Another winner from Stoker and a great narration. I didn't love this one as much as some of her others, but still decent and worth the time. Will listen to the next one.

Interesting

This was an interesting story but so cheesy. It is not my typical type of book I read though so it is hard to judge.

triggers... but good

this book had me fired up. Heads up, there are triggers of physical, mental and emotional abuse. Logan is a triplet and the eldest at that… he and his brothers decide to open a securities firm to help victims of abuse after  traumatic experience as kids. He's always been in love with Grace. She was his tutor in high school and when he enlisted, they were supposed to begin a long distance relationship. That didn't happen and now he hates her. Grace is a woman of quiet strength. Everyone in town loves her. Her parents though keep her on a short leash and she's an adult. She does whatever they want in order to get their approval. Easier said than done. This story will have your jaw on the floor. It's so shocking and upsetting but really good. Can't wait for the next book.

This was a fantastic read. The characters, storyline, storytelling was realistic, engaging and entertaining. I can't wait to see how the other books in the series turn out.

Fresh series starter

I really liked the start of this new series. Three brothers are introduced as coming back home to start a security business. In this first listen, Logan has a history with Grace who never left home. Both characters are a little damaged and have some baggage. But that’s what makes the story, it’s up to Logan and his brothers to fix everything.

There are threads for the next listen setting up Alexis, the intern versus the heat of Blake. Erin Bennett did a fine job of narrating and keeping me involved with the story.

A very different plot.

I enjoy this book, it’s very interesting. This book proves that you never know what people do behind closed doors. My heart breaks for Grace and I’m happy she reconnected with Logan. He’s her protector and he makes her comfortable with who she is, free to be herself without apology. I know some people write bad reviews about this book but I form my own opinion and I love the book. The plot is different and never boring exactly what I like in a book.

A little uneven but still entertaining

Susan Stoker’s stories can be pretty absorbing, like this one is. I can’t say that for all of them, as they can’t always be counted upon to deliver.
Claiming Grace held my interest because the suspense was tight and the characterization right on the money.
The reality of childhood trauma played a big part in the people portrayed. It was shocking and sad and all too real. Abuse is not something that the majority of victims can easily overcome. Even with full-on professional counseling, the effects are difficult to shuffle off and leave behind.
That being evident, I’m gratified that Stoker took this subject on and dealt with it forthrightly, and with compassion.
The sex seemed awkward and gratuitous, as though Stoker thought it had to be in place for the book to be well received. As a matter of fact, I hurried through those sections as they weren’t that well-written. I was in a hurry to get back to the story.
Narration is below par as the tone and inflection seemed stilted and robbed some meaning from the events described.

A breath of fresh air

This book was such a refreshing read. It had serious topics, but it wasn't the average love story, in the way of I want him, I don't want him, I want him, I don't want him type. I love how grace was very sure of what she wanted and what she didn't want, I love the fact that she didn't go willingly with her father. The amazing part was how protective all of the brothers and her friends were of her and her efforts to get away from her parents. Can't wait until the next book.
