Jack Ryan: the thinking person's James Bond

Preface: I have been a fan of Tom Clancy novels long before I started audiobooks. I love the jargon, the level of detail, the technology described so completely. I like the military, political and even the personal intrigue. Also, as you might guess from the review headline, I think Jack Ryan makes a great hero character.

This is a fine story about America's attempt to use a covert military operation to stem the drug trade from Columbia, an action sanctioned by the president during an election year. The political infighting is fascinating - a study in personal gain, leverage, and back-stabbing. The operation itself is described with an enormous amount of detail, from the planning, supplies, strategy, tactics, and of course, weapons. Great stuff, if you're into it.

The narrator, Michael Prichard, was competent, but undistinguished. Many of his "voices" sound very similar, and at times it's difficult to keep track of which character is speaking, especially in a 3-way "conversation". Still, he is easy to understand and his pacing and pronunciation were very good. Still he's not as good as some other narrators.

Worth it Once

Great writing and story as usual. Not quite as exciting as others in the series. Really like how much more Mr. Clark is involved in this one.

Great subject matter and nice to have a new antagonist. Definitely worth a listen.

Needs Better Narration

A little too much setup. Caused it to drag in spots. The narrator has a nice voice, but the reading speed was a bit slow for my taste, and could use more inflection and emotion.

Awesome. Scary. Gripping!

This time I really didn't know what was coming, as I'd never read this book of the series - just seen the movie. So it was like a brand-new story for me.
Great story, and someone certainly chose an phenomenal narrator ... it was hard to stop for chores, or eating, OR sleeping!
Another very entertaining read!

Good story, just too much detail

Really great if you need help sleeping. I really don't need the thoughts and hopes of characters that are going to get killed off.

Did not disappoint

The last 8 hours were such a thrill.
I struggled for the first 1 or 2 hours but I could start to feel the plot by then, the story was a bit slow until about 10 hours in. but By end, 22 hours in, I found myself in my car just to listen because I couldnt turn it off.
