Publisher's summary

A terrorist bomb explodes during a South Korean celebration of the anniversary of the election of its first president.

Alarms are raised in Washington. No one is claiming responsibility.

The first suspect is North Korea. Could it be making a power play against South Korea and unification? If so, how will the U.S. respond? Paul Hood, Director of the Op-Center, must answer these questions. The Op-Center, a largely autonomous new agency which takes on the government's toughest security problems, is only six months old, and has never been given a foreign crisis until now.

Hood's team, which includes a general, a former ambassador, a psychologist, and a computer specialist, tries to find the solution, only to discover a factor that could change the new world order.

From the Compact Disc edition.

Special opps entertainment with a little too much techno jargon

The concept of a top secret special ops center hidden deep underground is very appealing. Add in spies and a Russian enemy and it all seems contemporary. Two things I found off-putting were the excessive use of military and weaponry acronyms and gobbledegook which just interrupted the flow of the narrative, and the constant changes of setting so that when we come back to a previous character, it was three chapters ago — and on audible books, this means rewind to remind yourself who we’re talking about. All the weaponry acronyms could just be replaced with words like “weapon” or “gun” and I’d be a lot happier with the story. All of these slow down the story too much. However, the story is entertaining, and I will definitely read more of these.

Having trouble sleeping? Michael Kramer can help.

He not only is he mono toned. He also gets the characters voices mixed up.

Great new series

This looks as if it can develop into a great new series. The characters can be developed and I am looking forward to another Tom Clancy series

Good story

like the mystery and drama of international politics based around Korea and US support in the Asian world.

Clancy and Op-center was intense.

Would you try another book from the authors and/or Michael Kramer?

Yes, I am a fan of the all thrillers.

What did you like best about this story?

Donald's heroic actions to prevent the outbreak of a new Korean war.

Did Michael Kramer do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Yes

Could you see Tom Clancy's Op-Center being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Tom Cruise maybe, H Ford as Donald.

Nostalgic

Written during a time before we knew of the insanity & paranoia of North Korean leadership, & when diskettes were used to store files.
The story is a plodder; adequate. It lacks the action & suspense (and high tech) of the Jack Ryan series, and the characters are absolutely ordinary.
I probably won’t pick up book two in the series, but I wasn’t bored enough by the story with this one to return it.

It's okay

The narration was a little drab. I guess I just got used to Lou Diamond Phillips as a narrator in the later stories.

Clancy strikes again!

This was a really good story that was well told. Like all Clancy novels it was filled with the details regarding the inner workings of the military. One reviewer said Michael Kramer was monotone. I don’t think they listened to the same book! Anytime a narrator has multiple characters from different countries, it is extremely difficult to distinguish them. Mr. Kramer does a nice Korean accent without making it over the top.

Paul Hood is not Jack Ryan. If you are looking for another Jack Ryan novel, this is not it. However if you want a really good political thriller that could actually happen, this is it! Enough said.
