About this listen

On a steamy August evening, after an exhausting day in the courtroom, Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Cooper joins her longtime pals and partners-in-investigation, NYPD detectives Mike Chapman and Mercer Wallace, at a somber crime site. In her ten years as a sex crimes prosecutor, Alex has seen many victims, but few more poignant than today's, pulled from the water with her hands and feet obscenely tied to a ladder. Sleep comes uneasily after such a vision, but the knowledge that monsters walk the city's streets, preying on the innocent, motivates Alex and her colleagues with their sometimes heartbreaking work. Perhaps this time they will be lucky. A "cold hit" will match DNA from the crime scene with a suspect's DNA profile in the police database. Or is there a more sinister kind of "cold hit" that claimed the victims life in this case? Who was she? Her elegant clothes and manicured nails suggest affluent connections, but just how well connected suprises even Alex. Illuminating and inspiring, Cold Hit takes us from the paint-chipped offices of cops and D.A.s to the elegant restaurants of Alex's privileged Upper East Side life. The contrast is stunning, but it's all part of the extraordinary world that author Linda Fairstein has brought so vividly to life in this magnificent novel of suspense.©1999 Robert J. Bad Narrator

The narrator was horrible. She read so fast that it made it not enjoyable to listen to. There were times I think she just ignored punctuation altogether. It sounded monotone.

Worst narrator I've ever listened to

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Her monotone is sleep inducing. She's sooooo boring.

Any additional comments?

Grateful this was abridged so I didn't have to listen to Janney very long. I will never listen to any book she narrates. Absolutely no personality added to any of the characters.

Pronounce

Why is it so difficult to correctly pronounce Oregon and Nevada? I expected more from Ms. Janney.

When I purchased this one, I didn’t realize it was abridged. I hate abridged productions.

I prefer the unabridged & Barbara Rosenblatt

Unabridged audio books are a waste of $$$ IMO... but still a great story. filler since Audible will not let me submit without a certain #of words... which I definitely don't like... js

the narrator spoiled it all

It's not fair of me to rate this book since the narrator was so bad (IMHO) that I stopped half an hour in. I checked and this is the only one of Linda Fairstein's books she has narrated.

I like Ms Fairsten's books and I'll read others but this one!?!?!?

Cold Hit

While the story is classic Fairstein, I just had a hard time with the Reader. Allison Janney has a voice that just makes this book difficult to listen to.

Where is Barbara Rosenblat?

Allison Janney reads this book and if you have listened to any of Linda Fairstein's books read by Barbara Rosenblat this reading will be very disappointing. It also is abridged which I hadn't noticed when I purchased it. The story is good as are all Linda Fairstein's stories but this one as an abridged book is definitely not worth a month's credit.

Janney is a great actress, but...

Allison Janney is not the most versitile reader. Her voice is a bit flat throughout, and there are at least 2 places where poor editing has the listener hearing verbal mistakes, followed by the corrected language. Wierd.

Maybe I just don't like abridged

I liked this story, but it seemed a little bland. Perhaps I don;t like abridged stories. I have not read other fairstein, so I shall have to compare. It was an interesting enough story, but it seemed to lack tension. I tend to try to buy unabridged, because I figure if the story can be cut without damage, then maybe it is not as good as it could be.
