About this listen

A blonde bombshell floats face down in a swimming pool. Is it a love affair gone wrong? Or is something far more sinister afoot?

Cold War Copa is the first book in The Sideman Mysteries, a pulp fiction tale of Sin City during its Golden Age from author, playwright, and composer Phil Swann.

Las Vegas in 1965: Gangsters, showgirls, the Rat Pack, cool is king, and everything swings. Especially Trip Callaway, a young, wise-cracking trumpet player working the Sands. But when people around him start getting knocked off, Trip is thrust into a dangerous maze of secrets, lies, murder, and Cold War intrigue, where nothing is how it seems and no one is who they say they are. Was it the mob? The boyfriend? The stripper? Or could the truth lie at a mysterious top secret location hidden deep in the Nevada desert nobody wants to talk about?

All Trip knows for sure is, if he doesn’t figure it all out fast, he could be next on the killer’s hit parade.

Like hanging out with a good friend

This book was a joy from the first word. From the time the showgirl was murdered, I had to know what was next. Tripp was great to hang out with; part vulnerable, part wise-ass, perfect good buddy. I loved the narrative of the book, and I also just loved the feel of the book. Swann paints great atmospheric pictures. The story is interesting even before something happens. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

It's a fun ride

The writing was solid and the narrator was great. This book won't change the world but it sure created a world I enjoyed visiting. I look forward to the next book in this series.

Gotta love that savvy Trip Calloway - enjoyed!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, it was very cleverly written and a throwback to the old days in Vegas.

What did you like best about this story?

The author's use of music knowledge and facts that he weaved into the story.

What does Steve Staley bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Once he got into the story, he took on the character of Trip Calloway.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, I wanted to listen to it while driving.

Any additional comments?

Again, a very clever story with authentic facts about music. Author Swann gave me a thoroughly enjoyable and mind bending mystery. Can't wait for the next book!

Get Steve Staley back for book 3!

The narrator was great, and I'm beyond ticked off they replaced him for book 2. Zero desire to buy anything else in the series if Steve isn't narrating. The writing is average and I pretty much bought the first book for the actor reading it, not the story. Too cheap to pay for the best, I guess. Terrible decision.
