About this listen

When 18-year-old Kara Jones gets into a car accident on the way home from college, she's left with more than a few bruised ribs, a busted cell phone, and a totaled car. After a slip-up at the hospital, she’s shaken to discover that her family isn't all it seems. And now her mother's strange behavior and willingness to do anything to protect her secrets - including pulling Kara out of school - have Kara floundering in the dark.

Enter Derek Miller, a former classmate who's dealing with family issues of his own. His nerdy charm is too much for Kara to resist, and she's even more amazed when he agrees to help her dig into her mother's past. Together, they investigate her mother's old friends and boyfriends, hoping to discover who Kara really is. Instead, they find disturbing connections to the dark history of Kent State University, and an ever expanding maze of mystery surrounding Kara's birth.

As Kara and Derek chase secrets, she realizes he's the only person she can trust. But as they get closer to the truth, the disturbing answers reveal a web of evil far darker and further-reaching than they'd imagined, leaving Kara to wish she'd never asked the questions in the first place.

Overall I enjoyed this story. Unfortunately, I found the main character to be rather self-absorbed and not very likable. I didn't like the demands that she put on her mother and the way she constantly whined to her boyfriend, who had lost his entire family only a year ago. She definitely came off as pretty insensitive where he was concerned. I also didn't care for the fact that she got drunk way too much, especially when she was only 18. I was glad that she realized just how fortunate she was to have Derek in her life. They turned out to be just what the other needed.

Admittedly, I was caught up in her search for the truth and thought the story was intriguing. When the shocking details were finally revealed, there had been enough hints along the way that I wasn't totally surprised. I could understand why her mother had been keeping such a huge and devastating secret. The truth isn't always pretty.

The narration was one of the highlights of this story and I thought that Janine Granda gave a very good performance. Collision was an entertaining listening experience and I would recommend it.

Collision is a well-written romantic suspense. The storyline is suspenseful, with quite a bit of mystery. The characters are pleasant and moderately engaging. Overall it's a good story, by not my favorite by Kate L. Mary. Janine Granda does a great job with the narration and the characters' voices. This would've been a 5 star book for me if I could've liked the main character a bit more. Kara was a little tough to take for most of the book. The plot was good, the writing well done and the narration fantastic. My only complaint is Kara's personality at times.

Kara has an accident and thoughts of pain and death. To awaken in the hospital, her mother playing with her coat zipper, as she asks how I was doing. Father seemed more genuine, then again I was an only child so the focus has always been on me. A slip up at the hospital, unravels the family and me. Derek the nerd in school, became my knight. Interesting story without it becoming a soap opera, where it could have happened.
The narration was good. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion
