About this listen

Jake Owens is tired of life on his parents' Montana ranch, catering to city folk who want a taste of old-fashioned country living. He enjoys life in the fast lane, with fast cars and even faster women. When he falls in with the wrong crowd and is accused of murder, a stranger's bizarre offer at a second chance might be his only hope to clear his name.

Rachel Parker is highly devoted to her family. A tragedy prompts a daring move to the Oregon Territory for a fresh start in a new land. After meeting the wagon train's scout, the meaning of a fresh start may be more than she ever imagined.

Jake can't believe he's been sent back in time to act as scout for a wagon train headed for Oregon, and given the added burden of keeping one emigrant woman safe during the journey. He and Rachel are confused by their attraction to each other. Jake's ill-mannered, unconventional ways are overshadowed only by his notorious reputation. Rachel's traditional values and quiet, responsible character are the complete opposite of what attracts Jake to a woman. When their forbidden attraction turns to love, what will happen at the end of the trail?

Better than average. A Soft Romance!

Narrator was a bit slow and not as rugged sounding as I’d have liked but he did a very good job. There wasn’t any hot explicit sex scenes but the love was portrayed perfectly and the characters were believable.

Good Time Travel Book!

I found this time travel book better than most. It also gives some life lessons on how bad associations can lead to trouble. How a person can be wrong about what is important in their life until it is to late.

Will getting a second chance benefit Jake Owens who finds himself sitting in jail for a murder he doesn't remember committing? ..or will he continue his wild womanizing ways?

Jake's second chance involves his scouting for a wagon train heading for Oregon hundreds of years ago. Will Jake be up to the challenge as the train encounters breakdowns, bad weather, Cholera, Indians, forging swollen rivers,as well as trouble makers within the train?

It's a good story brought to life by the very talented Cody Roberts.

Good entertainment!

Time Travel and Wagon Train Romance

Jake Owens broke free of his mundane life on his parents’ Montana ranch to join a slick woman and the fast life in Los Angeles. The woman and her friends are the wrong people and set Jake up to be accused of murder. A strange man visits him in prison and offers him a second chance. The charges will be dropped against Jake if he agrees to scout for a wagon train traveling over the plains to Oregon. Jake is alarmed when he awakens in 1841 to begin his assignment which includes watching over Rachel Parker specifically.

Rachel is a young, beautiful woman devoted to her family. A tragedy has her traveling west with Tom, her drunken husband, and three young boys. When Tom stays drunk and fails to help with the trail duties, Jake steps in to help. Rachel is a woman of quiet, traditional morals who finds herself uncharacteristically attracted to the devilishly handsome, but rough, brash and supposedly womanizing, scout.

Jake tries to control his feelings for Rachel but he uncovers a secret that makes it even harder to stay away. Their relationship becomes more difficult as the people on the wagon train face the arduous dangers of the trail.

The adventure and danger of the wagon train is the backdrop for the strong love story. I really enjoyed the history as well as the growing attraction and sensual edge to the relationship. There is heartbreak on the trail and at the end of the trail that had my heart clinching. Is there any way that Rachel can “come back” to Jake?

This is the second story I read by Ms. Henderson and I enjoy her style. It is a nice break from some of the darker books I have been reading/listening to. I recommend this to readers who enjoy historical western and strong love elements.

Audio Notes: I was at first surprised that a male was narrating this. However since the story is told primarily from Jake’s situation this worked out well. Cody Roberts portrayed Jake in a strong, sexy voice and managed a soft, gentle voice for Rachel. He gives appropriate voices to other characters and does a good job with the entire narration program. I enjoyed the easy listening and recommend this in audio for those who like to listen to their ‘read’.

A HEARTWARMING ROMANCE/ADVENTURE THROUGH TIME

M M M I just love a sexy handsome cowboy whose bad boy ways have been transformed by the love of a good woman then couple that with time travel and an impossible ending and I'm hooked until the last word.

Jake's womanising has led him down the wrong path and he's now in jail for murder but an unknown visitor makes him an offer that's just too good to be true and the next morning Jake wakes up in a horse stall confused, wearing leather britches, moccasins and a knife, tomahawk and a Colt strapped on him. He soon finds out he's got a new job as a Scout for a Wagon Train bound for Oregon but..... it's 150 years in the past.

As soon as he sets eyes on Rachel he was smitten but she was on the journey with her drunk deadbeat husband and 3 small children but he tried hard to fight the pull of attraction and desire. The adventure was to last 5 months and in that time there were hardships, arguments, surprises, sickness, death, twists, false accusations, Indians but through it all was his longing for Rachel and hers for Jake.

This is such a well written action packed enjoyable story that sucks you in and you too feel the heartbreak, passion, turmoil and drama along with the characters and are able to visualise the campfires, characters, trails, wagons and hardships these brave pioneers of the Old West had to endure for the hope of a better life. And, despite everything, that's exactly what Jake tasted, a better way of life, with the love of a good woman. But, at the end of the trail someone is waiting for him in Oregon with devastating news and the romance that was hard won was easily lost overnight. Lots of looking, longing, brief touches and the sex was only really hinted at but what an emotional journey and Jake and Rachel's tumultuous romance was gritty, true to the era and very deep.

Worth a credit? It captures your imagination with richly described settings and characters, holds you on the edge of your seats with action packed scenes and rewards you with a HEA ending, so YESUM very creditworthy.

Great Adventure

Fascinating love and adventure story. Narrator Cody has the perfect cowboy accent and does not try to falsetto a female voice.

Enough to keep me reading but...

I love time travel books and the Oregon Trail setting in particular. The author drug out the will he / will she aspect of this romance till it hurt. She overused clenched fists and jaws way too often. More than half of the story was the characters churning through emotions and reservations. That having been said, I did finish the book and enjoyed it. The story was engaging when the story was actually unfolding. The plot twists and turns were inventive. This author should take advantage of a good content editor and beta readers. (Peggy, keep writing!)

Loved this!

Any additional comments?

Come Home to Me was my first ever audio book. (And I've realized that this is my first ever review) I wasn't sure if I would like audios or not. Cody did such an amazing job at sucking me into the story that I am completely hooked now.

I have read most of Peggy's novels and I have fallen in love with each character. I've never been a big fan of Time TravelTravel romances but Peggy has been able to pull you in to the time and place that she has so beautifully written about. I've never been anywhere west of Louisiana and growing up on the east coast you don't to experience the things you do west of here. Peggy was able to make me feel as if I have been everywhere that she has written about and I look forward to reading/listening to more of her work.

Awesome Narrator

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Cody Roberts has the most awesome voice. I could listen to him all day long. I also loved the story too.

What does Cody Roberts bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His voice is awesome, that southern deep drawl reminds me of Sam Elliott.
