About this listen

There was a small burst of light, and the sound of an electrical discharge. The two agents collapsed to the ground....

Looking up, Tim and Daisy saw a man with a pull-down ski mask covering his face....

The man looked at them and said, “Come with me if you want to live."

It was the beginning of summer and the last day of school. It should have been a happy day, a good day, but Tim Anderson, grandson of William Johnson, the Hero of the World, was in trouble. Arriving home, he soon discovers his parents are missing, and so is his famous grandfather. He needs help, but mysteriously, not even the police will get involved. Trying to solve the puzzle of his missing parents, Tim stumbles upon a secret invention, one that has great potential for the good of mankind, but also holds the power to enslave the world if it fell into the wrong hands.

Tim is determined not to let that happen. But his hope of keeping it hidden crumbles as a powerful and secretive department of the New Federal Government, the Technology Branch, discovers its existence, and will do anything to get their hands on it. Agents have been dispatched and they have their orders. Tim and company suddenly find themselves caught up in intrigue and uninvited danger as they struggle to keep the invention away from its pursuers. But the question is, can they succeed? And what happens to all of us, if they can’t?

A good story idea but...

The story isn't bad, but I did struggle with it.

The world is changed after an alien invasion that destroys a lot of the infrastructure of the planet back in the 2020's. 40 years later we follow a teenager as he is caught in the fight between his family and the over reaching government.

I like the idea of the story and will try the next book but I really struggled with it. A lot of the time it felt like I was reading about the 1950's with how the characters were interacting with the world. The history is covered a little bit felt that more was needed to help fill out the world. Maybe it was the country trying to go back to a simpler time but I don't see the world going away from TV, movies, or the internet of things. Culture changes do to events but I felt more frustrated trying to follow along with how the characters interacted with each other. some of this is cleared up at the end but there is a lot left that isn't.

The book feels like it is setting up the reader for the next books in the series as the teen is being brought into the family secrets. Hopefully the next book fills out more of the world and explains the why of what is going on in the 2060's.
