About this listen

One misstep is all it takes to forever change the lives of Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy.

During the ball at Netherfield Park, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy are irretrievably compromised and forced to marry. Angered beyond reason, Mr. Darcy prepares the vilest marriage settlement known to man, forcing Mr. Bennet to accept his terms or suffer the consequences of ruined reputations and unwed daughters.

The repercussions that follow show a determined young lady with keen intelligence and a prideful man who realizes that the consequences of their compromise are the best things that have ever happened in his life.

Adventurous P&P Variation

Exciting if improbable adventure for our Pride and Prejudice characters. The author creates fabulous dialogue and flowing passages that keep one riveted - I was riveted even as I noted some silly or unlikely or even highly improbable scenes. The Most Improbable scene was near the end with Caroline Bingley who would never have made the guest list. Some reviews criticize the narrator but I didn’t mind her soft spoken voice - not at all.

One of my favorite retellings

I actually really like this version and it may be one of my favorites. I know some have not liked the narrators voicing of some of the characters and while I agree she could have voiced some of them better, overall the narrator has a pleasant voice and I enjoyed her narration for most of the characters. I love the portrayal of the main characters in this version and despite the shortness of the book, I think it gives more character depth than many others. Also, the dialogue is exceptional keeping you entertained the entire way through. Some retellings drag on and have more chapters than are even needed, and this is not one of them.

Great book.

I highly enjoyed this book. It was a delight to listen to. I had read the book before. So many smiles on my face and laughing out loud due to puns and wit. Great read. Great Jaff.

Good

The narrator, Bridget Thomas, is good but her voice portrayals for the Pride and Prejudice characters felt off to me, and for the most part, a bit too soft-spoken and whispery for my taste. Even when a character was supposed to be shouting displeasure, for example, she simply voiced a loud raspy whisper. For the female voices, it was sometimes difficult to distinguish between the characters with respect to who was speaking at a given time. I felt Elizabeth’s voice was too soft for this particular portrayal of her by the author—which I loved. This Elizabeth is so clever. Mrs. Bennet’s voice was also way too soft and didn’t display her nerves or flightiness at all. She seemed completely out of character to me.

I still like this story and recommend it as one of my favourites by Sue Barr. My full book review from 2021 is on Goodreads.

entertaining and unique

I enjoyed the narration and the story, finding the 'more than a Bennet' story engaging.

Darcy foot in mouth & Art of War in play

I read this several years ago & enjoyed this story and was thrilled when it came out in audio format. This has a very mad & mean Darcy who is forced to marry Elizabeth after an accident during the Netherfield Ball. Elizabeth who has read The Art of War uses that to her advantage and wins. Col Fitzwilliam & his parents quickly realizes what a butt Darcy is and tries to wake him up to the MAJOR errors that he has done. But he is so blinded by anger & jealousy that he cannot see straight. I love how the villains are dealt with and the scenes towards the end with Caroline & Bingley are fantastic, just wait until the end of the second epilogue! The narration was good but it seemed she struggled with a few of the characters but it is one I would listen to again. A few other reviewers mentioned more about this so I dont need to cover that. I hope that Sue Barr will continue to add her books as audiobooks as we all enjoy her stories!!

Could have been amazing

Loved this story, the dialogue is amazing, Lizzie is so good in this story. The narrator kinda ruined it for me though, she's a talented narrator - for the right story. This is not it!!!! Her voice is heavy/deep, kinda sultry, a bit hissy and whispery. It does not at all fit a story that is witty with saucy banter. Had this been read by Stevie Zimmerman, Harry Frost, Elizabeht Klett, Simon Alison, David Pickering - any of them would have made this an entirely different book. The story is so good and distinctive, and the dialogue is so cleaver. I would read the book rather than listen, the book is worth it!
